How to get to Thun?

The wedding will take place in the Bernese Oberland, in and around Thun (pronounced "toon"), Switzerland. For an interactive map and to generate specific driving directions, click the map below.

Flying
There are several airports in Switzerland: Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern. Bern is the closest with direct connections to Amsterdam. However, there are less flights and they may be more expensive.
Zurich is probably the easiest with direct connections to the US and Amsterdam. There are direct trains from Zurich Airport to Thun. Peters aunt Marianne recommends you get a train ticket at the airport train station before hopping on the train.

For online airline tickets check out Swiss (partners with BA, AA), KLM (partners with Northwest, Continental, Air France, Delta), Expedia, ebookers

Train

Train travel in Switzerland is, not surprisingly, clean and timely. The end station at which you want to arrive is Thun. There is also a direct ICE train that goes from Amsterdam to Basel. We have taken this ourselves and found it a very comfortable ride.
Others from Nederland may be taking this train so if you want to hook up with them feel free to contact my father (Jaap Vriesendorp). He is willing to coordinate a group and has found out there is a group discount.

For online schedules and travel info check out Swiss railways, Dutch railways, or Swiss tourist info. The following info is copied from the Swiss railways site. If you plan using the trains in Switzerland we recommend you look into some of these options:

Swiss Transfer Ticket: (Swiss Fr. 118, sold online or abroad) "If you plan on visiting only one destination in Switzerland, the Swiss Transfer Ticket is the way to go. This ticket includes one free round trip to anywhere in Switzerland. The trip must start and end at the Swiss border or at any Swiss airport. It is valid for two trips within one month."

Swiss Card: (Swiss Fr. 170, sold online and at the airport) "Not only does it include the transfers from the border or airport to one's destination and back, it also offers a 50% discount on all trips effected by train, boat, postal bus and most mountain trains and cable-cars between the 1st and 2nd transfer day."

Family Card: (free) "If you have children be sure to ask for a free Swiss Travel System Family Card. It will entitle your children up to 16 years of age to free travel, as long as minimally one parent is accompanying them. Non-family members between the age of 6 and 16 receive a 50% discount on all Swiss Travel System tickets."

Driving

If coming from Nederland it is probably best to aim for Basel and then Bern. From there the highway is a direct shot to Thun. For your specific driving directions click the map on the top.

It is also a possible to rent a car at either the airport or in Thun. For online car rental places check out: ebookers (good rates), Avis, Hertz, Europcar
