Chapter 20
(Howie’s View)
We soon crossed the borderline that separated Florida & Georgia. I stopped so that we could get changed, use the bathroom, or to stretch. I let Christie borrow one of my shirts until we could get her some cloths of her own. I went through the back seat & put our luggage in the trunk so that Kara could have a little legroom. Christie came out of the visiting center carrying Kara. I pulled out my breakfast & ate while Christie did Kara’s hair. I watched the highway as cars continually passed us. I finished & picked up my trash & threw in away. Kara ran up to me as I walked back to the car. Christie had French braided her hair.

“Daddy, daddy, look what mommy did to my hair,” she said.
“I love it,” I said, “It makes you look very pretty.”

It felt kind of weird that she had used mommy & daddy in the same sentence. I picked her up & walked the rest of the way to the car. I put her in the back seat & buckled her seat belt. I went to the driver side when Christie stopped me.

“Howie, let me drive you need some rest,” she said.
“I tell you what I was going to drive into Atlanta & get us some cloths. You stay rested up & I’ll let you drive tonight & tomorrow, deal”
“Deal,”
I had a feeling that Christie & I were going to get along on this trip & I loved it.
