Chapter 25
(Christie’s View)
We have only been on the road for a couple of hours. Kara was in the back watching
Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs with headphones on. I looked over at Howie. He looked like he was a member of the Military. He wore camouflage jeans & shirt, sunglasses, & his hair was pulled back in a ponytail. The sleeves were cut off his shirt so you could see his muscular arms. I wore overalls with a camouflage shirt. My sunglasses were hanging from my cross & my hair hung halfway down my back. I looked towards the road. Howie & I were going to work together to save our daughter. I know it sounds weird, but to her we are her parents. I am her blood relation & Howie has taken very good care of her over the last 5 years. Both of us will never give up until we know Kara will be safe & that is the most important thing. The road was deserted so Howie pulled over. We made our lunch & ate. Howie approached me with his hand in his pocket.

“You know I found this on the side of the road & I think it belongs to you,” he said as he gave me a small smile.

He opened his hand to reveal a necklace. When I saw what it was I gasped, It was the necklace from the mall! Howie climbed behind me & placed it around my neck.

“Howie, I thought I…” I started, but he cut me off.
“I know what you told me, but I think you deserve it. You have done so much for Kara even if it doesn’t seem like it. I bought it after you went into the pet store. I also bought it because it doesn’t seem to be right that you only have one special possession.”

A tear slipped down my cheek. No one has ever done something like this for me. I had always lived a rough life & I have never been treated like this. Howie saw my tears & held me in his arms. I cried into his shoulder. When I stopped crying we got back in the van & were on our way once more.
