Chapter 24 |
(The next morning, Howie’s View) I had to say goodbye to my car. It’s too much of a risk so, I bought a white van. I went back to the store for more supplies that I didn’t think about the day before I put the coolers & clothing basket in the trunk. They were filled with food, drinks, cups, plates, silverware & napkins. I stacked the pens, pencils, paper, & atlas in the glove compartment. Suitcases & the bag my mother had brought to my hotel a few nights before were filled with clothing, food, & personal stuff like hairbrushes & toothbrushes. Pillows, blankets, & dog food were stored in the last couple of seats. I put a couple of towels in a box & placed the puppies inside. It was the only way to keep them out of trouble. I bought a van with a radio, tape player, & CD player. It also had a TV so I went & got some movies, CD’s & headphones from Target. I also bought high-tech walkie-talkies in case Christie & I get separated. I put Kara into a seat & put her seat belt on. I hopped into the driver seat & Christie got into the passenger seat. “Everyone ready to get the heck out of here,” I said. “Yeah,” came a reply from behind me. I looked at Christie. “I’m ready to go across the country to protect her,” she said. I started the car & got onto the interstate. Christie & I had been talking the night before about our plan. It was to go out west to North Dakota until the summer ended. Then we would go to Maine & let her start school there. If we were discovered we would move until we knew Kara was going to be all right. I hope this works I thought. |
