Chapter 27 |
(Christie’s View) I woke up to silence. I saw that we were moving. I looked over at Howie & saw nothing, but hatred, anger, & fear. His muscles were tense, his breathing was ragged & his hands were shaky. “Howie, are you OK,” I asked in concern. He didn’t answer. I put my hand on his. It seemed to calm him down because his hands felt steady, his muscles went back to normal, & his breathing calmed. I noticed right then that his face was pale. He pulled over at a gas station & stepped out. He walked inside & paid for gas. I stepped outside & waited for him. When he came back he ignored me. Before he got back into the van I grabbed his hand. He turned around & starred straight into my eyes. I felt his forehead only to find out he was burning up. I took the keys from his hand & escorted him to the passenger side. I walked to the trunk & noticed a couple of imprints in it. I opened the trunk & pulled out a clean towel & wrapped ice in it. I climbed in the driver side & placed the towel on Howie’s head. He held his stomach & starred out the window. I drove into a store parking lot. I asked Howie for some money & he handed me a twenty. I walked inside & bought some Advil. I went back to the trunk & got some water. I made Howie take two Advil & then I started to question him. “Howie, what is wrong?” He swallowed hard & then answered me. “They are closer than we think Christie. Last night three vans pulled up & started talking about us & I knew it was them. I sped out of there & they started to shoot at the van. I didn’t stop until I had to get gas. I didn’t see them follow me the entire time.” I took everything Howie had told me. It scared me to know they were right on our trail, but they are very patient. Tears started to fall down Howie’s cheeks. I leaned over to him so I could comfort him, but the unexpected happened. He looked up at me & we ended up kissing. It was soft & firm. I pulled away a little embarrassed. |
