The primary value and norm of the sub-culture is trustworthiness. Each member of the sub-culture has a lot at risk should any member, or prospective member, disclose information about the subculture to the outside world. Recruits into the subculture are repeatedly tested for honesty, candor, and the ability to remain discrete about the existence of the subculture and its operations. Even the existing members appear to be tested from time to time. Should a prospective member or member fail to behave in a trustworthy way or be proven to have lied to those within the subculture, all contact is severed with the prospective member and the member is disciplined by being isolated from the group, either temporarily or permanently. In some cases, more substantive discipline is applied to the offending party.
The specific threat made by instant messenger contact to this researcher during June 2001 when Jerry found the researcher to be lying on an important issue was, "I will make it so no one will ever believe you and then I will take care of you!" A second person using instant messenger and using the identity "enforce_the_laws" then appeared on screen while Jerry remained on screen and launched a computer virus. The institutional computer network being used at the time launched a countermeasure but a record of the threat and accompanying conversation was lost. The phrase "take care of" had been used oftern in conversations concerning the disposal of unwanted sex slaves. This researcher was subsequently lured into a police sting emulating a pedophile madam and is awaiting appeal of several felony convictions related to the sting.
Trustworthiness and mastery is often measured in terms of candor. Dana offers this advice in her 30 May 2000 e-mail.
