Pogonia ophioglossoides | ||||||||||||
The Rose Pogonia is 8-20". A 2 to 4 inch single leaf is lanceolate and located about halfway up the stem; basal leaves are absent at flowering, appearing later. Its fragrance has been likened to that of raspberries. Open acid soil of wet meadows or sphagnum bogs. Often found with Arethusa and Grass Pink (Calopogon) orchids. I found these ones in a medium sized bog on Negro Mountain in Somerset, PA. These small beautiful orchids were all over the place. Blooming at the same time were the Club-spur Orchids along the edges of the bog and back under the Hemlocks in wet areas. |
