Mr. Christopher C. Hedges
[Address removed]

Dear Christopher::

Thank you for contacting me to express your views regarding the Nike Missile Site C-47 in Portage,
Indiana. I appreciate hearing from you.

You were specifically interested in preserving the facilities at Nike Site C-47 as a memorial to the Cold
War. As you may know, Nike Site C-47 is scheduled to be cleaned-up by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
(COE) this summer. The abandoned missile silos are currently filled with contaminated groundwater. As
spring approaches, the groundwater level will rise, threatening surrounding surface soil with potential
contamination. The facilities on this property will not be removed or destroyed as part of the clean-up process.

After COE clean up is complete, the property will be transferred to the U.S. General Services
Administration (GSA) for disposal. If you are interested in purchasing the land to ensure it is preserved,
feel free to contact Lucreiza Patruno in GSA’s Chicago office at (312) 353-0300.

Thank you again for contacting me. I hope this information is helpful, but do not hesitate to let me know if
you have any other questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
/s Pete
Peter J. Visclosky
Member of Congress
