Joseph Ejercito Estrada

Joseph Estrada, actor-producer of over one hundred films, was born to civil engineer Emilio Ejercito and Maria Marcelo in San Juan then in the province of Rizal on 19 April 1937. He had his elementary education at St. John Academy and high school at the Ateneo de Manila. He enrolled for college at the Mapua Institute of Technology where he took up three years of mechanical engineering. He is married to Dr. Luisa Pimentel with whom he has three children, namely, Jinggoy, also an actor and now mayor of San Juan, Jude who has similarly entered showbiz and only girl Jackie.

A towering figure in Philippine movies, Erap as he is fondly called by his friends in the industry and ardent followers alike is looked up to for his vast contribution especially in terms of ensuring the general welfare of film practitioners. He is a member of the board of advisers of the Katipunan ng mga Artistang Pilipino sa Pelikula at Telebisyon (Actors' Guild of the Philippines) and a one-time president of the Philippine Motion Pictures Producers Association.

He was elected Mayor of the municipality of his birth in 1969, Senator in 1987, Vice President in 1992 and finally President of the Republic of the Philippines in 1998, the Centennial Year of Philippine Independence.

Since his very first break in LVN Pictures' Kandilerong Pilak in 1954, Estrada has endeared himself to the moviegoing public via films that captured the imagination of the common people and broke box-office records. His films are much touted for their social relevance as much as for their high entertainment value. Most memorable are his screen team-ups with the other legends and giants of Philippine movies in the course of his stellar career that spanned four decades. In 1962, he established himself as a top-ranking action star with the smash hit from Larry Santiago Productions, Asiong Salonga. He firmed up his status as an excellent actor when he bagged his first acting trophy from the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences for Markang Rehas which he also made in 1962. He won four additional best actor awards from the country's oldest existing award-giving body for Geron Busabos in 1964, Ito ang Pilipino in 1966, Patria Adorada in 1969 and Kumander Alibasbas in 1981. The following year, he became the first lead actor to be elevated to the FAMAS Hall of Fame. It was a twin triumph as he was also inducted concurrently for his distinguished achievement as producer as the film company that was put up in his name, Emar Pictures/JE Productions, similarly bagged five subsequent best picture awards from FAMAS for Geron Busabos in 1964, Ito ang Pilipino in 1966, Kill the Pushers in 1972, Bakya Mo Neneng in 1977 and Kumander Alibasbas in 1981. Other film honors include his victory in the maiden edition of the Metro Manila Film Festival in 1975 with his entry Diligin Mo ng Hamog ang Uhaw na Lupa which was declared best picture and for which he was at the same time adjudged best actor. The Philippine Movie Press Club, a local group of entertainment journalists, gave him an award of merit in 1985 while the Film Academy of the Philippines which hands out the rightful Philippine equivalent of Oscars conferred him the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990.
