THE UP FILM CENTER PRESENTS ...

All throughout the history of Philippine cinema, one subject matter that persists to captivate the imagination of both filmmakers and local audiences is the life and martyrdom of the country's national hero. Such might have something to do with the fact that what has turned out to be the paramount artform of the century arrived in the country barely two days after Dr. Jose Rizal's execution in Bagumbayan by the Spanish firing squad. It may not be an exaggeration to say that each and every Rizal movie somewhat marks a milestone in the course of local filmmaking. Mike de Leon's Bayaning Third World proves to be no exception.

Not a few are pinning their hopes on the master filmmaker's latest work. Many believe that the film would not only bring back the glorious days of Philippine cinema's golden age but also usher in a new era in the local film industry's quest to finally attain solid recognition in the global arena.

In this spirit, the UP Film Center in cooperation with Cinema Artists Philippines and Cinema as Art Movement, a student organization of the U.P. College of Fine Arts, is happy to hold its premiere and once again play a crucial role in showcasing a proud moment in Philippine filmmaking.
