Joel C. Lamangan has directed some two dozen mainstream features and a big number of stage plays and television presentations. He underwent theater training at the Central Institute of Theater Arts in Southeast Asia, the Brechtian Theater in Germany and the Theater of the Oppressed in Havana, Cuba in addition to his long stint with the Philippine Educational Theater Association. He acted and directed on stage and television while training for film at the Communications Foundation for Asia and the Sydney Film and TV School in Australia. He began his career in movies as a bit player for films by acclaimed directors Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal before moving on to featured roles. One memorable part was for Peter Weir’s The Year of Living Dangerously (1983) starring Mel Gibson. Joel was later recruited to direct for the award-winning drama anthology show on television called Spotlight. He received good notices and earned thereby the chance to do full-length features. A version of the comic book tale, Darna, was his big-screen directorial debut in 1991. He would afterwards distinguish himself at the box office making a string of glossy melodramas before shifting to films delving on social ills and espousing the gospel of change. For such efforts, he was rewarded with various honors practically from all the country’s award-giving bodies—the Young Critics’ Circle for Pangako ng Kahapon (1994); the Philippine Movie Press Club and the Film Academy of the Philippines for Pangako ng Kahapon (1994), The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995) and Bulaklak ng Maynila (1999); the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino for The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995); the Metro Manila Film Festival for Muling Umawit ang Puso (1995). But his supreme triumph remains to be the top plum for The Flor Contemplacion Story at the 1995 Cairo International Film Festival.
