Analysis of MOC Image m1501228b
Take the first tube to Cydonia....
(And I'll meet you at the station)

As evidence accumulates it becomes obvious that the Martian Tube anomalies are something much more compelling than a simple Dune train as postulated By JPL.
A debate rages through the ether. Anomaly Hunters have polarized around the issue, natural or artificial, living or engineered.
In our last installment  we were able to show that these anomalies are most definitely not a simple dune train.

The feedback we received from the fans of the Art Bell show provided a wealth of insight on what exactly folks think these things are. On the one hand, there are those who feel these anomalies are indicative of intelligent design and then there are the proponents of a living organism, ranging from Giant Rhizomes to Giant Alien Mega Sand worms (shades of Frank Herbert) and there is some merit to these arguments. An astounding number of responses from uninitiated readers, who upon viewing these images for the first time, suggested the worm hypothesis. On first glimpse these "items" do indeed appear wormlike. Indeed, arguments of this very nature were what first put "serious" anomaly researchers in full debunking mode on the tubes, fleeing to protect their credibility from besmirchment by out of control fringe elements in the anomaly community.

Let's examine the popular "sand worm" thoery first.

Suppose there existed a living organism on Mars that thrived on a planetary scale. Indeed these tubular anomalies and the parallel symmetry of the ribs which are found protruding just above the Martian regolith in spots where the tubes are not visible does tend to support this theory.

As I believe Mr. Hoagland would ask of us "What does it eat?", we'll start there.
A reasonable question, in light of what we know about Mars.
In light of what we DO NOT know about Mars, my response would be "Plenty!"

In the last year the Mars of the 1970's has gone from a sterile, waterless planet to a wondrous place capable of supporting life. In a recent article for the BBC Dr. David Whitehouse reports that the available data now supports the hypothesis that pools of liquid water may exist in the north polar regions of Mars and that there could well be lakes of liquid water under the ice to be targeted by future landers.

(Indeed, my webmaster Photon, posited this very same idea in his last web offering, suggesting that an analogue to Earth's Lake Vostok might exist under the northern Martian ice cap.)

Quoting From the BBC article:

"But Meredith Payne and Jack Farmer, from Arizona State University, US, believe that sometimes there could be pools of open water at the poles. They have studies all of the polar images returned by the Viking Orbiter missions in the 1970s and the current Mars Global Surveyor mission, and have identified several sites of possible recent volcano-ice interactions that could result in water. Jack Farmer is encouraged by the discoveries made on Earth over the past few decades that life can exist in a far greater range of extreme environments than had been once thought. "These discoveries have greatly extended the known range of terrestrial habitats where life survives," said Farmer. "All of these conditions could exist in polar regions of Mars today where subglacial volcanism has occurred."

And to once again Quote the Discover Science news recent interview with geophysicist Maria Zuber of MIT,

"because the northern cap lies at a lower elevation than the rest of the planet, "water than you put down almost anywhere in the northern hemisphere is going to flow toward the pole. It is quite probable, then, that you once had standing bodies of water at high northern latitudes. They might not have persisted for very long, because we don't know how warm it was and things may have frozen over quickly. But you clearly could get the water up close to the pole."
Clearly, Mars was not always the frozen wasteland it is today. What happened? Some of the ancient water could have been lost to the atmosphere and then, over countless millennia, ejected into space through complicated interactions with the Martian magnetic field. Some might still be locked in aquifers and other formations beneath the surface. And some may exist in the southern polar cap--but not much. The southern cap is significantly smaller than the northern one. Even if the Mars Global Surveyor finds water ice in the south, it won't come close to eliminating the water shortage, according to Zuber."

Water trapped in aquifers around the planet. BIG ONES. Not just beneath the polar caps.
This evidence points to the likely possibility of biological life and liquid water containing life supporting minerals and amino acids and even possibly plankton or higher forms of life based on our knowledge of terrestrial analogues in the deep one ocean of the Earth. So, be it animal or vegetable or whatever we have established a food source (water is a given).

What other supporting evidence is there?? From two disparate sources, my associates Lori (the Biker Gal) and Betsy (Westoo of the Cydonia list) comes complementary supporting evidence.

These crater images, both seem to show what in some researchers opinions are spherical objects nestled snugly in the bottom of these craters, which are immediately adjacent to these tubular anomalies.
One possibility suggested is that they are eggs or spore sacks by which this life form propagates. Perhaps these are similar to the basal disc of silk which spiders utilize as an egg sack, which can contain from a relatively small number to literally thousands of eggs.

It was then pointed out that a crater found in MOC m0401722g and MOC m0401722d show what some consider as "worm casings" or skin, which has been shed due to the growth process as these organisms hatch\and or take root and head into the Martian sands.
Here is a colorized version of the aforementioned craters from Gianluca Napolitano of www.mars-explorer.net

Special thanks to Gianluca Napolitano for these images.

Ok, That's enough about Mega-worms for a while.

On to the "Engineered " Hypothesis........Johnny Danger's personal favorite! (Sorry Ladies!)

Utilizing the same images and data one can extrapolate a hypothesis for the Martian tube anomalies being an intelligently designed construct.

A planetary wide Mega scale engineering project as theorized by Richard Hoagland and the Enterprise Mission. (We anxiously await Mr. Hoagland's premise on the origin of these artifacts, but lacking his input we will muddle on undeterred.)

To re-iterate, having established the more than reasonable probability of subglacial lakes (ala Lake Vostok) under the nothern Martian polar cap and the possibility of liquid pools of water on the surface in the same locale as well as subterranean (submartian?) aquifers of enormous volume around the red planet (remember, according to Zuber the majority of the water that once made up the lakes and oceans of Mars is still on Mars-where did it go? As the amount of water ice at the poles is insufficent to account for all the planets water, the answer is patently obvious-it's underground-perhaps this lends a clue to the mystery of Mars' weak magnetic field.-more on that later)

A network of interconnected conduit for the circulation of planetary water resources between the the subglacial polar lakes and the aquifers found closer to the equator. Perhaps this is what Schiaparelli termed "canali " 500 years ago, since hidden from view by the shifting sands of Mars.......

But no matter. Back to the trenches (literally!) Mr. Hoagland has coined these unusual structures the "glass tubes of Mars".
Martian sand would be the most readily available building material and most likely would produce glass of excellent properties. With the lighter atmospheric pressure it would have greatly enhanced properties over terrestrial glass.

The logistics of scale involved in such an endeavor stagger the imagination! The equipment and construction techniques are beyond the ken our present technological ability. But maybe not by that much. Perhaps a technology inherently different than ours could design, fabricate and implement a project of such magnitude with relative ease.

One would assume that the tubes must have been constructed prior to the cataclysm that so changed the face of our sister planet as the logistics and resources required to facilitate this project would be severely diminished in the ensuing chaos of a sudden global disaster.

Another option is that the water disappeared from the surface of Mars over a relatively long period of time (non-geologically speaking) allowing the indigenous intelligence's there to construct these edifices as a last ditch effort at water conservation and survival. Many have commented on the non-linearity of the tubes as an argument against intelligent design. But perhaps the builders followed the only course available to them-following the path of the water as it retreated underground. Perhaps even circumventing or re-routing the flow paths to suit their needs.

In this light, it has been suggested by Lou Farish that the spherical domes in the craters (worm eggs to the au natural proponents) could be some types of pumping station. Photon, as well, has suggested something along a similar vein, in that of the numerous unusual craters found associated with these tubes some could be construed as water treatment facilities (perhaps naturally occurring ones indigenous to the biosphere) essential to the support of life.

Hexagonal craters, craters with huge spheres in them, craters with water in their bottoms and
lotsa of craters with unusual looking "things" in them all cropped from MOC 1501288a thru d.

A third option is a synthesis of these two theories. If the product of intelligent design...could these be bio-constructs? An organism engineered to serve a purpose much like the way we've engineered bacteria to eat oil slicks or insects to eliminate certain pests or even members of their fellow species (via a terminator gene passed on to the next generation). The recent inclusion of jellyfish genes in everything from rabbits to mustard plants bound for Mars (ultraviolet light makes them glow!) shows us that this is a possibility to be considered.
Self-propagating and self-maintaining they could continue to reproduce and spread providing new pathways for circulation and access.
An interesting notion......

As is Johnny Danger's tradition we close this piece with an unusual image to my knowledge not widely publicized at this time. (and no, it's not another Megadolphin- still looking!)

This image, Cropped from MOC m1501228b   in our opinion lends credence to the intelligent design theory. It shows, we believe, an entrance to the tube system from the surface of Mars.

A cavernous opening adorned with a huge sculpture of a human head morphing into a marine creature (looking suspiciously like our old friend the Coelacanth). It seems to me that whomever littered the surface of Mars with faces, pictograms, ideograms and pyramids would adorn such an edifice accordingly.

Geologist Ron Nicks of the Enterprise Mission has likened these tubular structures to the "Lincoln Tunnel of Mars"
In that Spirit I hereby christen this edifice "the Grand Central Station of Mars".
Surrounded by liquid water, the three dimensional aspect of the load bearing members (ribs) is plainly visble.
Adorned with effigies of creatures from both land and sea, it will be hard for JPL to dimiss this as a sand dune.
Reflections from the tube walls can be seen on the surface of the slew (backwaters)which surrounds this magnificent discovery. Even the "whiskers" on our friend the Coelacanth appear to serve a utilitarian purpose (possibly water transfer conduits or some device to facilitate egress).

As a caveat to these observations, I would comment on the the relative state of preservation of the ancient artifacts that we see in this image. Other Martian anomalies, (The Face at Cydonia, the D&M Pyramid and the "Kingface" all appear to be severely eroded by eons of Martian weathering processes.
How is it that these tremendous sculptures have escaped the ravages of time?
Egyptologists tell us that the Sphinx at Giza would be all but unrecognizable if not for constant maintenance procedures initiated as far back as the time of the Pharaohs.

Is it possible that they are still being maintained?

I envy the first contemporary human beings fortunate enough to enter the belly of the beast through the gaping maw of the Coelacanth.....

Author's note:
Did you catch that? Two months ago MIT says it was possible once upon a time (liquid polar water)-now now the talk is about recent possible, (got that?) -recent volcano-ice interactions, Recent, geologically speaking, might as well mean that there's active volcanism on Mars today.
Is this a very subtle disclosure program?
I find it interesting to note that the northern polar cap of Mars is one of the more underimaged areas of the planet....
It would certainly be interesting if these conditions that "exist in polar regions of Mars today where subglacial volcanism has occurred" were caused by something other than "recent volcano-ice interactions."

The Mars Express will on hand in a few short years with a suite of instruments that will be able determine the composition of materials from orbit and see beneath the surface of the buttes and massifs of Mars.
And NASA won't control the data.
After Our president's recent trip to Europe I think we all know what the Europeans think about American hegemony.
The Russians are bound for Mars. And apparently willing to sell their mother and any other services they can to the highest bidder to finance the affair. And they're having a Vodka shortage (this is a fact)!
Even Japan will have a presence there soon and the Japanese media and people love ancient mysteries.

Could this be the reason for NASA's recent willingness to honor FACETS request for reimaging?
Will they "unceremoniously dump" the 5 to 10 images that Facets requested on the internet without warning next month?
Is this NASA's out? Caught between Brookings and their own duplicity.
Will they let us be the heroes? Or at least let us bring to fruition the seeds planted by Di Pietro and Molenaar twenty five years ago and tended by so many others along the way?

It may be a slow process, but good things are worth waiting for......
