STEP 8-
                PLACES OF REFUGE
Mt 18: 21-35- God, in His mercy, forgave us even when we were in the depths of  the sins of our past lives.
We must also become willing to forgive and be reconciled with others.  When we are in the position of having to make amends for wrongs we have done, the underlying attitude must be "from the heart".  When God sees such a heart, He will move and work and bless far above our ability to ask or even think.

Lk 6:37,38-God can make even our feeblest attempts blossum into great miracles.  Our willingness to forgive those who have harmed us and to ask forgiveness of those whom we have harmed allows us to move into deeper blessings and growth.

Lk 19:8- We must acknowledge and make restitution for the emotional and physical damage we have caused in the past. If we have wounded others, we must take steps to offer appropriate amends for the healing of those wounds.

Jn 13:34,35-We must first acknowledge and apologize for the ways we have hurt others by our past behavior and second, we must set healthy relationship boundaries for ourselves and allow these boundaries to become a form of "living amends".  We are to be known by our capacity for love.  The source of this love is God's love.
This is unconditional love that is given without thought of reward or acceptance.   This way we become more effective in all of our ongoing relationships.

1 Cor 13-If we do not have a form of God's love, agape love , we have nothing.  No matter how smart, good looking, kind, benevolent, or charitable we are, all of it is for nothing if we don't have unconditional love for all those we come in contact with.  Codependent feelings are made up of having a love that has certain motives attached to it.  We expect something in return.  This is not a healthy form of love.  This scripture moves us toward the kind of heart God wants us to have.

2 Tim 1:7-Of all the phases that we need to go through, this step is the most fearful of them all.  God gives us a spirit of power, love and a sound mind. We need to remember this and not be fearful. We have God's spirit of love to guide us through the offering of amends and the sound mind through the Holy Spirit to help us with the timing and the methods that we use.

James 4:11,12-The willingness to forgive can be attained only when we have passed through a series of God-given steps for grieving over past offenses. The stages are shock, denial, anger, depression, and sadness.  These steps purify our hearts.  Only then are we ready to approach the final grieving step--forgiveness-- without resentment and with emotional integrity.

STEP 9-
                    PLACES OF REFUGE
Mt 5:9-With our hears full of God's love and peace, we can extend forgiveness and appropriate amends where we need to.  To just sweep the past under the rug or go on like it never happened is not the adult way to handle the wrongs that were afflicted on us and the wrongs that we afflicted on others.  These wrongs must be confronted if there is to be any peace in our lives now,or in the future.

Rm 15:2-These two steps (8 and 9)  are bridges to the restoration of healthy relationships. We must reach a state of peace with others in our lives before we can have peace within ourselves. With no inner peace, we are in a dangerous position of reverting back to past behaviors.

Phil 1:9-11-We must be assured of the fact that, as we speak our words of amends, we have the Holy Spirit directing what we will say.  We must learn to rely on the Holy Spirit to give us guidance.

Col 4:5,6-We first have to be reconciled in our own conscience, reconciled with other persons, and reconciled with God.The words of reconciliation must be tempered with harmony and peace.

Philemon 8-17- Because of our past behaviors, we have lost a true sense of responsibility for our own actions.
If we are to bring about a total change in our lives, we must be willing to take on a healthy sense of responsibility. We make amends and forgive with a spirit of love.  We do not take these steps with a spirit of expecting something in return.  God, working through us, becomes a radiant source of relationship healing, just as Paul was among the members of this fragmented church.

Ps 51:14-17- We need to turn to God for the willingness to make amends, we release ourselves from the power of old resentments, which have held us in bondage.  David's "broken and contrite heart" illustrates our own brokenness.

Prov 16:20-24- Our wisdom increases as we work through these steps and that wisdom will show itself in everything we do or say. All phases of interaction will be healthier and more positive.  The release that is gained through reconciliation is like a load of bricks being removed from our shoulders. The benefits of going through these steps far outwiegh the pain of doing them.  Don't give up!  Let Jesus be your guide and rest in His loving embrace as you gain more and more confidence .
RECONCILIATION
jESUS CHRIST HAS RECONCILED US TO GOD AND TO OTHERS.  MANY BARRIERS COME BETWEEN PEOPLE-RACE, SOCIAL STATUS, SEX, PERSONALITY DIFFERENCES- BUT CHRIST CAN BREAK DOWN THESE BARRIERS.  JESUS CAN TRANSFORM OUR MOST HOPELESS RELATIONSHIPS INTO DEEP AND LOVING FRIENDSHIPS.

Text:  This word is used of the deliverance of the Israelites from the Egyptians (Ex. 14:13), and of deliverance generally from evil or danger. In the New Testament it is specially used with reference to the great deliverance from the guilt and the pollution of sin wrought out by Jesus Christ, "the great salvation" (Heb. 2:3).
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Topics: Regenera'tion

Text:  only found in Matt. 19:28 and Titus 3:5. This word literally means a "new birth." The Greek word so rendered (palingenesia) is used by classical writers with reference to the changes produced by the return of spring. In Matt. 19:28 the word is equivalent to the "restitution of all things" (Acts 3:21). In Titus 3:5 it denotes that change of heart elsewhere spoken of as a passing from death to life (1 John 3:14); becoming a new creature in Christ Jesus (2 Cor. 5:17); being born again (John 3:5); a renewal of the mind (Rom. 12:2); a resurrection from the dead (Eph. 2:6); a being quickened (2:1, 5).

This change is ascribed to the Holy Spirit. It originates not with man but with God (John 1:12, 13; 1 John 2:29; 5:1, 4). As to the nature of the change, it consists in the implanting of a new principle or disposition in the soul; the impartation of spiritual life to those who are by nature "dead in trespasses and sins." The necessity of such a change is emphatically affirmed in Scripture (John 3: 3; Rom. 7:18; 8:7-9; 1 Cor. 2:14; Eph. 2:1; 4:21-24).

Topics: Redemp'tion

Text:  the purchase back of something that had been lost, by the payment of a ransom. The Greek word so rendered is apolutrosis, a word occurring nine times in Scripture, and always with the idea of a ransom or price paid, i.e., redemption by a lutron (see Matt. 20:28; Mark 10:45). There are instances in the LXX. Version of the Old Testament of the use of lutron in man's relation to man (Lev. 19:20; 25:51; Ex. 21:30; Num. 35: 31, 32; Isa. 45:13; Prov. 6:35), and in the same sense of man's relation to God (Num. 3:49; 18:15).

There are many passages in the New Testament which represent Christ's sufferings under the idea of a ransom or price, and the result thereby secured is a purchase or redemption (comp. Acts 20:28; 1 Cor. 6:19, 20; Gal. 3:13; 4:4, 5; Eph. 1: 7; Col. 1:14; 1 Tim. 2:5, 6; Titus 2:14; Heb. 9:12; 1 Pet. 1:18, 19; Rev. 5:9).
The idea running through all these texts, however various their reference, is that of payment made for our redemption. The debt against us is not viewed as simply cancelled, but is fully paid. Christ's blood or life, which he surrendered for them, is the "ransom" by which the deliverance of his people from the servitude of sin and from its penal consequences is secured. It is the plain doctrine of Scripture that "Christ saves us neither by
the mere exercise of power, nor by his doctrine, nor by his example, nor by the moral influence which he exerted, nor by any subjective influence on his people, whether natural or mystical, but as a satisfaction to divine justice, as an expiation for sin, and as a ransom from the curse and authority of the law, thus reconciling us to God by making it consistent with his perfection to exercise mercy toward sinners" (Hodge's Systematic Theology).
