Study and Conversation

Chapter 22

“How many kids do you want?” Patrick stared at her. “Four,” he said. “Okay, how many cars do you want?” He smiled. “I want as many cars as I can possibly afford. I’m a guy. Duh!” She laughed. “Okay, okay, that was dumb. Let me be more specific. How many useful, functioning vehicles do you think a household with one husband and one wife should need as a minimum for comfort and convenience?” Patrick sighed patiently.

“Four!” he said. “Okay, maybe that conversation ought to be dropped. Let’s go on to another topic.” Patrick held up his hand. “Hold on a minute. Are we going to go over a list of questions? And what are you taking out of your pocket?” He looked amused and slightly exasperated.

Christa stopped fishing through her pants pocket and smiled up at him. “Listen, the times we’ve been together have been torture. We’re both concentrating on our feelings and on how much we want to get closer. Well, this is a way we can actually get to know one another better without physical contact. And we can begin to resolve any issues early in our relationship, before they have a chance to grow into problems.”

Patrick smiled and took her hand. “Okay, then, ask away. And is that a list? Gee, you’re taking this seriously.” She nodded. “Some of these questions are very serious. Others, I will admit, stem purely out of curiosity.”

The list was long, and Patrick and Christa learned much about one another. Colby walked in on the tail end of a conversation that went something like this:

“How do you feel about boogers?”

“Boogers!”

“Yes, are you one of those people who absolutely must have a tissue?” He nodded tentatively. “Or are you one of those who say if the booger’s dry, you’ll just pick it and roll it around on your finger for a while?” He smiled and nodded there, recognizing himself.

Ew!” She shuddered. “That’s so disgusting. Just remember that when you touch me, you should never have touched a booger first. In fact, just wash your hands anytime you’re going anywhere near my face with those things.” She looked at his hands as if they might contain polluting properties.

Patrick smiled at Christa. “Okay, I get it. No boogers. I will do all my booger picking in secret, hiding my habit behind a veil of silence.” She nodded emphatically, seeming relieved. “Exactly!”

As Christa began reading over the rest of the list, Patrick continued answering, but he slowly began commenting on her appearance when he gave his answers. His comments grew increasingly more romantic, until Christa found herself staring at him. She stood transfixed while Patrick came close and kissed her.

“My hands are on your face,” he whispered, breaking the spell. “Ugh! Gross! Cut that out, Patrick. That wasn’t fair. That wasn’t fair at all!” He tickled her and she laughed.

“See? You didn’t catch any dreaded disease?” She pushed him playfully away from her. “Not that you know of. These things can take weeks to develop.” He smiled with mischief. “Do you know that the mouth has far more germs than the nose?” She shook her head. “That’s good to know,” she said. ”Now I won’t be so tempted to kiss you.”

At his place by the door, Colby said, “Amen. Good thought.” They both jumped in surprise.
