Prayer, Family Names, and Cocoa Chapter 1 Christine had been in prayer for hours and
sensed no relief from the burden she carried. No matter how long she talked
to the Lord, she was still almost to her 27th birthday without a
husband. Not even the prospect of a boyfriend. When God had seemed silent,
and her mind had begun to wander, she’d decided that the only place to go was
her mom’s house. Her mother had a cure for every discouragement, and
Christine was sure that this would be no different. When she arrived at her mother’s front
door, the sight of all the Christmas cards Mandy kept in the entryway made
her smile. Cards from her cousin Christine in Florida, a second cousin named Christelle, whose husband was stationed overseas, and Christalynn whose mom was Mandy’s aunt. The rest of the
cards were from other equally wonderful people, even friends and neighbors
they’d known in the past. However, the family cards were different, and they
all had one thing in common – every woman’s name began with “Christ.” It all started with Mandy’s younger sister,
an ex-prostitute who found her way to faith in the most unusual way. She had
heard the voice of God one day telling her to kiss a total stranger. Not one
to avoid compromising situations, the woman kissed him, and that had begun an
adventure of faith that took the family by storm. The woman, Aunt Willow, had
named her girls in such a way that each one contained “Christ.” This had so
pleased each of the family members, that every woman from then on had been
named similarly. Two cousins were named Christine, each born a day apart, and
neither mother realized the mistake until it was done. Happily, the girls never minded sharing
their names, though they teased one another about it all the time. With a
sigh, Christine wondered how her namesake was doing – she called her cousin,
younger by a day, namesake, because she’d been born first, but in actuality, Namesake
had gotten the name before Christine did. It was a silly joke between them –
an argument that went in circles and never seemed to end. Sighing, Christine decided that she would
rather spend the day with her mom than with her dear cousin, because just
like her, the other Christine was still single. Mandy would have the advice
Christine needed, and so she headed down the hallway and entered her mother’s
kitchen, ready for a good talk and a mug of her mother’s tasty hot cocoa. |
