McKENZIE McKenzie was the bravest dog That you have ever seen Wiry terrier, Border bred He was a dog - so keen To retrieve a ball or catch a stick He'd go through hedges ten feet thick He'd leap a wall or jump a fence And what he did made no sense To humans born with city fever But for him-a born retriever With sense of duty and instincts bred To leap on roofs or garden shed To claim his stick or glove or ball He'd leap a six to eight feet wall A hundred times he'd jump and try He'd do it willingly or he'd die He'd search in thickets full of gorse And always return with it of course Barbed wire fences might tear his eyes But deterred him not as he claimed his prize- Another throw and a mad foray Into the world of animal play I once saw him dive into a water-filled bin And use his left paw - just like a fin To scoop the water from the container In order to see the object plainer An intelligent dog who has gone away To a home on a farm or so they say. |
