Correct! During a 1988 primary debate, Al asked Dukakis to explain his prison furlough policy, but did not mention Horton or any other member of that program. It was the Republicans (specifically George H. W. Bush) who dug up Willie Horton and used him as a way to stir up racists nightmares of what would happen under a Dukakis administration. During the 2000 campaign, Bill Bradley’s camp mistakenly accused Gore of introducing Horton into the 1988 campaign.

This picture doesn’t have anything to do with the question. I just wanted another excuse to point out that Al volunteered for Vietnam while George W. pulled strings and ended up as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard, a position he was not qualified for in the slightest, but did (oddly enough) keep him well out of the line of enemy fire. Then he went AWOL for a whole year just to take a job on a Republican campaign. And for some reason, Bush thinks this means that men and women in uniform will respect him as Commander-In-Chief, but they won’t respect Al Gore, an actual veteran who served his entire tour of duty. In a war zone.

Since it’s highly unlikely that the press is going to mention that before November 7, I just thought I'd share.
