UNITED BROTHERHOOD OF QUARTERMASTERS |
Join the Quartermaster's Union! |
First (& Founding Chapter) |
Who are the Quartermasters and why exactly do they need a union? The Quartermaster is arguably the most difficult and yet most rewarding job on any pirate, privateer, or (eck!) naval military ship. It is an elected position (or in rare cases, appointed by the Captain), and is the person in charge of the entire crew and ship except in times of battle, when the Captain takes over. The Quartermaster, or QT in nautical abbreviations, is generally the most feared and most respected person on board the ship. When a crewman is charged and found guilty of breaking the ship's articles, or otherwise causing strife onboard, it is the quartermaster who decides and administers the punishment. Many times this meant death, and the QT was often an excecutioner. But that did not make him a heartless killer. The QT was called upon to be fair & just, and due to his unerring sense of equalness did the job of divvying up booty also be placed upon him. When a ship was sacked all merchendise of value was brought on board and meticulously sorted and counted by the QT, who then divided shares among the crew. Thusly was he also well-liked by many crewman. Click Here for Articles on Quartermasters and Punishments (I'll be collecting these from various authors and historical documents. Submit yours!) So why the union? Blackbeard (AKA Edward Teach) was one of the most feared pirates in history. But where would he have been without his trusty QT? Dead, with a mutinied crew or worse. But no one knows who he was, and his name is mentioned in but a few history books. We Quartermasters of the UBQT are tired of playing second fiddle to the captains who get all the glory. All we want is a little recognition. Since there are quite a few of us Quartermasters in the Society for Creative Anachronisim, we thought we'd start our first branch there, and work our way out. I'm a Quartermaster; how do I join? Easy. Send an e-mail to Damashi of Tora and you'll be added to the Member Page. There are no membership dues and no requirements, other than being a Quartermaster. We don't even have a union head! Just a bunch of jack-booted thugs (us.) If you want to show your membership, make yourself a belt favor with the UBQT logo (which is a jawless skull with an eyepatch over two crossed cat o' nine tails.) You may or may not wish to add the "UBQT" letters on it. That's it! |
