Founded by Royalists of Earth's Great Britain, Britannia was meant to recreate England as much as possible. Ruled from its colonization by the Starbuck family, Britannia developed from an agrarian society into a sophisticated, yet traditional world. While Britannia was an early member of the United Federation of Planets, after many decades it began to stray from the founding tenets of the Federation. The lower house of Parliament lost power and withered, leaving the monarchy with nearly unlimited power. The Britannian church strayed from the more liberal aspects of Anglicism and became much more fundamentalist, adding aspects of Wahabi Islam to it. Eventually, the monarch gegan to be seen as the latest in a line of prophets. At the beginning of the 25th century, Britannia was ruled by Phillip IV, the most corrupt of the Starbuch monarchs. His eldest son, Crown Prince Bret, rejected his family's total rule and renounced his position in the succession in order to leave Britannia and study medicine and psychiatry. He joined Star Fleet as a Ship's Counselor aboard the Federation Frontier's USS Ulysses, Flagship of the Strategic Operations Group (www.oocities.org/t_zaitsev). There he met Tatiana Zaitsev, a young surgeon. The fell in love and while on an away mission to the mystical planet Gaia, they had a daughter whom they named "Eve". Gaia was influenced by strong magical forces and was inhabited by wizards, mages and witches who lived incredibly long lives...as long as they remained on the planet. Once they left, they immediately fell ill and died. Gaia was also home to a non-corporeal spirit of extraordinary malevolence. Known as The Darken Lord, this spirit tried to gain control of Eve at her birth, so that she could become his human host. Her growth was accelerated greatly, so that only hours after birth she was as large and intellectually developed as a young child. Within 36 hours she was a teenager. The crew of the Ulysses and her parents fought to save her from the Darken Lord and succeeded in locking him in a secure energy prison. Unfortunately this success was tempered by the knowledge that Eve would have to be left on Gaia, to be raised by the Chief Mage of the world. Eve proved to be the most powerful wizard yet born on Gaia, and it was expected that she would succeed the Chief Mage. Over the years on Britannia, Phillip and Bishop Potemkin, head of the Church, continued to oppress their people, diminish liberties and whittle away the rights of the citizenry. Phillip's younger son, Prince Lee assumed the title of Crown Prince, but was disliked even by his father, for his weakness and debauchery. Around Starbuck Palace, small revolts began and quickly coalesced into an organized opposition. When the opposition leader, Samuel Wallace ganed a seat in the lower house of Parliament and tried to reinvigorate it, Phillip dismissed the body and called for assistance from the United Federation of Planets on the pretext that agents from other planets were behind the burgeoning civil war. Star Fleet dispatched the USS Ulysses to investigate. Upon arrival they quickly determined the nature of the conflict and moved in to protect the populace, most of whom had joined the opposition in rebellion. Phillip had moved to confine and kill any Britannian found in revolt, killing many millions of his subjects by the time the Ulysses arrived. Phillip's armies were quickly defeated, Prince Lee killed and Phillip, Potemkin and their closest advisors arrested. Upon the suicides of Phillip and Potemkin, the surviving members of Parliament asked Bret Starbuck to re-establish the House of Starbuck and the Monarchy. Fortunately Star Fleet scientists had been studying Gaia during the intervening years and had found a way to release Eve from its influence. Leaving the planet would not cause her death, but most of her magical abilities would be lost. She would only retain her ability as a telepath, and even that was diminished, but at last she could be reunited with her parents. Bret Starbuck once again refused the monarchy, but now that Eve able to travel, the Britannians had a new queen: Eve I. A young woman now, Eve has been dedicated to the establishment of a Parliamentary Monarchy that adheres to the ancient Magna Charta of her ancestors. Britannia has resumed its position in the Federation and among her neighbors in the Alpha Quadrant and has rebuilt the infrastructure that was destroyed in its brief but tragic civil war. |
