Time Stood Still
by Rachel Young

I was walking down the street one day
When I heard a familiar voice call out my name
I turned around to see you there
I could see all the years had passed you by
And treated you quite well, unbelievably fair
I said, "It's been such a long time now
How have you been?"

"Things are well, I've grown up a lot since then
Married now to a beautiful wife going on year two
Living in a big brick house just over the river bend
You look great, you must be doing well
How have the years gone by for you?"

"Well, things haven't changed much with me
Still working at the same place downtown
Living in the same room on the same street
In the same small town
Met a few guys, engaged to one
Thought I was in love each time
But they all fell through the ground"

Silence then but you offered a smile
Though it's been years,
it still gets me somehow
I've never fully gotten over you
I've wanted to call or write and tell you so
But it doesn't seem to matter now
Whether or not you ever know

Life goes on, though time stood still for me
You've moved on, my heart can't forget so easily

So you said, "We should get together for a drink some day
Reminisce on the past and catch up on the years since then
So how about it? What do you say?"

"Sounds great but I'm really busy these days
You know me, some things just never change
But it was real nice seeing you around"
Yet I can't help but think it's been such a long time
We seem like complete strangers now

"Well keep in touch, here's my telephone number
Call me when you get the chance to hang out
Maybe have dinner at the house with me and my wife
She's wonderful and I think you'd really like her somehow"

A hug and a kiss on the cheek,
We parted our ways
As I watched you walk away
I couldn't help but think upon those days

Life goes on, though time stood still for me
You've moved on, my heart can't forget so easily
