Dirty, Acorn, and I met up for pho today. These two are like brothers to me (who also happen to share birthdays within a week from me). No one picks on me as much as these two, and though I see them about once every three months, they are two of my closest guy friends. Of course, they think I’m a bit zany and on the liberal side and probably wonder how they got mixed up with a girl like me (it’s a long story but we met in college and life has never been the same since). But they’ve been there for me in many ways throughout the years we’ve known each other. Which is the only reason why I’ll put up with their abuse.
Dirty: You dork!!
Me: I’m 24-years-old and I’ve been called that every day of my life. It’s getting old.
Dirty: Fine, I have to find you a new name.
Me: You can try, but everything in the Guinness Book of World Geeks and Dorks have already been reserved for me.
Dirty: You dork!!
Me: Haha.
I’m trying to set Dirty up with a friend of mine. In turn, he and Acorn are attempting to set me up with their 6’3” friend in San Jose, California. He’s originally from this area, and I happen to know his younger sister. His name even rings a bell in my head, but I’m sure I would have noticed a Korean male who stood 6’3”. But the idea of Acorn and Dirty setting the two of us up is absolutely ridiculous.
Me: Hello?? I’m moving up north. Not west to Cali.
Dirty: Well obviously you’re moving in the wrong direction.
So Dirty and Acorn are going on and on about how great this guy in Cali is and how he and I would be perfect together.
Acorn: Both of you are Korean. Both of you are Christian. Both of you are tall. You’re 5’8”, right?
Me: No! I’m 5’7”. You already know that, but you always think I’m 5’8”.
Acorn: No way. You’re 5’8”.
Acorn insists that I’m 5’8” because he’s an inch taller than me. So that would make him 5’9” instead of 5’8”. Does that one inch really make a difference?
Dirty says there are a lot of great guys, but this guy in Cali is someone he really looks up to and admires. That's a high compliment to pay to anyone and for someone to say something like that says a lot about your character. Too bad the guy is in Cali. But Acorn and Dirty don’t think the distance matters, and I shouldn`t let a minor detail like geography stand in the way.
Dirty: You’re going to visit California again soon, right?
Me: I don’t know. I hope so.
Dirty: Well, he’ll be happy to show you around next time you go.
Me: What?! Excuse me, but the next time I go to California I plan on hanging out with my friends . . . people I know. What am I supposed to do? Just show up at his front door, knock, and say, “Hello, my friends sent me over.”
Dirty: (with his slick smile) Nah. We’ll give you a care package to take along with you.
I *scoff*. As if that would make it any less awkward. I feel like they’re some cheap dating service and they’re hooking me up with one of their esteemed clients. No thank you.
Me: Ok. It’s time to drop the subject. It’s not gonna happen.
(Dirty and Acorn briefly glance at each other.)
Dirty: Umm. Well we kind of already told him about you.
Acorn: Yeah. Told him we have this tall, kind of obnoxious, loud friend.
Me: (I give him the evil eye.) I’m not obnoxious! I’ve calmed down a lot in the past couple years.
Acorn: Umm. Yeah. Sure.
Dirty: Nah. We told him great things about you.
Me: (shaking my head) I can’t believe you guys.
When I say I’m going to set my friends up, I’m partially kidding. I’ll give it a thought and if they meet, they meet. And if they click, they click. Great. But I certainly don’t go to the extremes some of my friends do. Like sending me to some stranger’s door in California with a care package. I’m surprised they didn’t also suggest I wear a bikini and high heels.
But then I remembered we were eating. And I`m sure none of us wanted to lose our appetite at the thought.
