After having lived in the lap of luxury of modern suburbia in a central air-conditioned apartment with a fireplace in the living room, large bay windows, washer/dryer, and a garbage disposal, there are definitely some things I will have to get used to around here. For example, the sound and sight of those darn pigeons outside of my window every morning. I’m not a big bird fan (I think I can attribute this to Alfred Hitchcock in the same way I can blame Stephen King for my dislike of clowns). I’ll also have to bite the bullet buying groceries around here. A box of cereal cost me nearly five bucks. I’m on a tight budget here. Five bucks is reasonable for an appetizing value meal at Burger King—not a bowl of Frosted Cheerios. I’ll also have to endure this summer heat for another month or so. I opted not to invest in an a/c unit and instead make do with a couple fans. Bad idea. I think I’ve already lost five pounds just from sweating it off.

After seeing my place, my brother thinks I’m going backwards in time and doesn’t understand why I would opt for this setup over what I had in Virginia. But I can live without luxury. I grew up without it, and I don’t think the extravagant and lavish lifestyle suits me very well. What I’m craving is something deeper than a simple a/c unit.

The only thing I miss about D.C. are a few very special individuals. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had that ache in my heart of missing someone. But being away from them has made me realize all the more just how important they are in my life, and I can’t imagine where I would be without them.

Thank you Kat, Daniel, Michelle, Jung, Olive, Melysa, Tommy, Jessica, Angela, Cyndi, JT, and Aionna for making my last days in Virginia a very special one.
