WHAT APRIL 16, 1990 MEANS TO ME
(Dedicating my Boston Marathon to Dad)
When I was 10 years old, I lived with my family - Mom, Dad, 2 brothers, and a sister.  We lived in a small town in Southern New Jersey called Riverton.  My father told us of his childhood in Boston, Massachusetts. There was a twinkle in his eye and magic in his voice when he talked about Boston's annual marathon.  He told us how the greatest distance runners in the world tested themselves each year against the 26 miles, 385 yards that separated Hopkinton from Boston.  Back then, anyone who was crazy enough to try it was welcome to run.  Today the field is restricted.  Only the top 20% of American marathoners qualify to run with others from around the world.

1990 is my turn to join the field - to run with the greatest distance runners in the world - from Kenya, Japan, Sweden, Ethiopia, etc.  So, Dad, I'm sorry you couldn't be here.  I'll do my best.  I'll give it an effort that will make you proud.  Thanks for your inspiration.
THE MONTREAL MARATHON
Though nowhere close to my fastest race, Montreal was my favorite marathon for many reasons that I can't list here. Among 5126 participants, I finished 402nd - not world class, but at a level that I take considerable pride.  The camraderie of teammates (Gate City Striders), the presence and support of my wife and children, the long-awaited qualifying time that earned me a place in Boston, and the energy of the enormous French Canadian audience (shouting "Chapeau! Chapeau!") - all made this a treasured memory.
