In late 2005 I had an opportunity to visit with Merlin the Maker at his newly relocated shop in the deep south to take a crash course in knife making. Over a four day period he shared quite a bit of knowledge from his bag of tricks and took me through the process from start to finish. Over the next year and a half I was able to make about 20 knives in my spare time. I have made a few diifferent styles, but my favorites were the Italian replicas. I started with some copies of 60's deerfoot bolster style. The last 4 or 5 were 11" and 13" stilettos. These knives are rock solid and probably weigh a good 30% more than the best knives of the 50's. My shop is somewhat lacking, but I look forward to the day when I can build a new one with a few more tools and more space. It is one of the most satisfying hobbies I have ever undertaken. |
