| The End of NAFTA and the WTO as we know them: NAFTA and the WTO are trade agreements the United States agreed to under Clinton. Both involve making trade between the United States and the rest of the world easier. The WTO allows for lower tariffs between us and all other countries involved in the WTO. NAFTA makes North America one big country as far as economics are concerned. There is complete free trade between the United States and the rest of North America. However, business regulations are done on a country to country basis. This has lead to companies moving their factories out of the United States for two main reasons: The Labor is cheaper, and the environmental standards are looser. Not only does this mean American jobs are being lost, but perhaps more importantly we are encouraging exploitation of human beings. The Raines Administration would not acknowledge any trade agreements without: 1. Guaranteed Living Wage for Employees: no global commerce will take place unless the employees of a company are making living wages. 2. Child Labor is not used. Any company using child labor will not be part in a United States Trade Agreement. 3. A progressive effort towards human rights in a country. The United States will not trade with any country that doesn't make strides towards being democratic, giving it's people's free, fair, multiparty elections; as well as human beings having basic civil liberties. 4. Doesn't meet international environmental standards. 5. Manageable workweek. The United States will not trade with companies which force their employees to work past exhaustion. The United States has adopted a 40 hour work week. We would seek to adopt an international hour work week, and any company that works its employees beyond that without fair compensation(such as overtime) would not trade with the United States. Also the United States would continue to work with the UN and NATO to protect citizens of the world from Human Rights abuses in their own country much like was done in Kosovo and South Africa. |
