Reid Wolcott
Reid's Kiting Career:

Reid Wolcott has been flying sport kites since 1994 and has competed in almost every dual line category since then. Reid's first trip to the AKA National Championships was in 1997 in Wildwood, NJ where he competed in Intermediate Individual Ballet and Precision as well as Experienced Team Ballet and Precision as a team member of the BumperKites sport kite team. That year BumperKites won both Ballet and Precision, and Reid's first two national titles.
In 1999 in Muncie, IN Reid won his third National Title, and his first individual title, by placing first in Masters Individual Precision. This is his most memorable moment in his sport kite career to date.
In 2000 Reid went to the National Championships in Treasure Island, FL as an individual, as a pairs team member (R.A.W. Power), and as a five person team member (Visual Impact). That year R.A.W. Power placed first in Masters Pairs Ballet and Visual Impact placed first in Masters Team Ballet.
In 2001 in Billings, MT Reid won his sixth and seventh national titles in Masters Pairs Precision and Masters Indiviual Ballet, his second most memorable moment.
In 2002 in Ocean City, MD Reid won his eighth naitonal title with his father as part of R.A.W. Power in Masters Pairs Ballet.
Most recently Reid went to the nationals in Dayton, OH as both an indiviual and as a pairs team member (R.A.W. Power). He added two more national championships to his list (bringing his total to ten), one in Masters Individual Precision and the other in Masters Pairs Ballet, where R.A.W. Power defended their 2002 title. He placed third in Masters Individual Ballet after a very FAST routine, and R.A.W. Power took a third in Masters Pairs Precision after a very SLOW routine.
Reid's Other Life:

Outside of kiting Reid leads a fairly normal life that revolves around kiting. He is currently attending the University of Washington in Seattle and lives on campus. He is in his sophomore year and is studying to major in the field of Atmospheric Sciences. Most of his classes right now revolve around physics and calculus. He will most likely go on to obtain a masters or Ph. D. His love for Meteorology started after watching the movie Twister, although this is a rather strange way to figure out what to do with one's life, his love of weather continues today.
    He has a wonderful girlfriend,
Melissa Fiorentino, who is also looking to major in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington. She too was enlightened by the movie Twister. Melissa supports Reid, when she is not teasing him!
In the Sping Quarter of 2003 Reid and Dan Brown, who is a fellow sport kite flier and a graduate student in Michigan, put together a kiting class at the University of Washington, and sponsored by
Prism Designs and Cutting Edge Kite Shop, in which students bought a kite to enter the class and then made several trips to Ocean Shores, WA to learn to fly them. Teaching the class brought a whole new level of kite flying to his attention. He will probably run the class again next year.
During this past summer of 2003 Reid worked at
Cutting Edge Kites in Ocean Shores where he got to talk all day about what he loves to do! Currently Reid is employed at Office Depot near the University Village.

Reid's Musical Decisions:

Reid's style of flying is very fast and snappy making his musical selection for ballet performances very exciting. Reid chooses not to choreograph a routine in advance for several reasons:
"One, frankly I don't like choreographing individual routines, it bores me. Two, I like the feeling that no one, not even myself, knows what I am going to do next! Three, I love too many pieces of music to settle with one, I like flying to a different song every time I go out there, If I find a piece I like exceptionally well I might fly it two or even three times. The element of surprise is fun for me, it gets my adrenaline going, and that is one of my favorite things about kite flying."
