Our hosts persuaded us that the only safe way to travel to Hanoi was by car, with a chauffeur. Hai was our driver for the ten-day trip to the north, and, of course, he had lots of cousins and brothers who owned hotels along the way. |

The children who insisted on acting as our guides at the Marble Mountains were quite essential in showing us how to get around these cave-temples. They were also very good at getting us to buy souvenirs. ("Very poor - need money - buy books for school.") |

The Lake of Sighs
Legend has it that Mai Nuong, who was picking mushrooms, and Hoang Tung, who was hunting, met here in 1788, promptly fell in love and arranged to marry. However, because of the threat of a Chinese invasion, Hoang Tung joined the army, neglecting to inform his betrothed. Believing that he no longer loved her, Mai Nuong sent a message for him to meet her at the lake. When he didn't turn up she drowned herself in the lake, which has since been known as the Lake of Sighs. |

The Site of the My Lai Massacre. This is where Lieutenant William Calley's platoon (and others) murdered hundreds of unarmed villagers. A small museum, built with American money, tells the story.
Apparently the only American casualty that day was a soldier who shot himself in the foot to avoid being involved in the slaughter. |

This little girl followed us all around the Thien Vuong Pagoda trying to sell us incense, repeating something over and over in a whining voice (in Vietnamese), until we gave in and bought some incense, which we then gave back to her to sell again. |

Our visit to the Po Klong Garai Cham Towers was a bit of a disaster. We took the wrong path and got cornered by ferocious cacti. We never did get to the towers. |
