| Crossing from South to North was quite an experience. Our car actually got bogged in the mud on the main highway. Fortunately a gang of locals were standing by to pick up the car, passengers and all, and put it down on the road further on. We were asked the usual question about whether we were Russian, and made the mistake of replying with the standard answer we had learnt in the South - "Kong Lingxo", which means "We are not Russian". In the North, we had to suddenly start saying we were indeed Russian, as they are the heroes in this area. Our error cost the driver a packet of cigarettes. |

| Halong Bay is the most scenic area of Vietnam, similar to Guilin in China. We had a rather cold three-hour boat trip around the bay, including a stop at one of the caves. Unfortunately, the cost turned out to be ten times the price we had negotiated. They had "accidentally" left a zero off our written quote. We refused to pay at first, and referred the matter to the local police, only to find out later that the police were in league with the boat owners. We finally came to an agreement, after a long and complicated discussion, that we would pay five times the quoted price. | The Ho Chi Minh Museum, close to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, where the body of Uncle Ho lies in the tradition of Mao Tse Tung in Beijing.
