Dr.
Hom's Grand Rounds Case #86 |

Patient
A
Patient B
Case History: One
of these patients has been a diabetic for 10 years with a HbA1c never less
than 10% over those years. The other patient is a diabetic of 20 years
with HbA1c varying between 7.0% - 9.0% over the last several years. One of
these patients has absolutely no retinopathy at all with almost normal
vision. The other has 20/70 best vision with 2 risk factors in 4/4
quadrants, paramacular exudates and retinal thickening visible in each
eye.
Questions: Which
would you predict to have the worse retinopathy? What systemic laboratory
testing would give you some clue as to the morbidity of either
patient?
