| their nations. Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram. And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash. And Arphaxad begat Salah, and Salah begat Eber. And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah, and Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah, and Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba, and Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were sons of Joktan. And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east. These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations. These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided after the flood.". Geographically, the nations settled, as shown in a Hammond map in the 'Standard Bible Atlas', copyright 1959, by The Standard Publishing Company, Cincinnati, Ohio. Japheth's descendents are shown thus, Gomer in present day Ukraine, and also in Turkey, with Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Tubal. Meshech falls somewhere around Georgia, while Ashkenaz appears to have settled in Russia, and Magog in Kazakh ( Kazakhstan? ). Kittim is on Cyprus, Caphtorim on Crete, Javan in Greece and Macedonia. Elishah is in Italy, and Tarshish in Spain and Portugal. Tiras is in Bulgaria and Rumania. Madai settled Iran. The descendants of Magog are shown as spreading into Mongolia, China, and India, while the descendents of Gomer are shown spreading into the balance of Europe. The name Ham is Cham, and is defined as hot ( from the tropical habitat ). Ham of course did settle in the tropics. The descendents of Ham settled thus. Cush settled the upper Nile, including Ethiopia, Somalia, and the Sudan. Phut, Lubim, and Lehabim are shown in Lybia. Mizraim and Pathrusim are shown around Egypt, while Philistim appears to be the area of Israel. Canaan settled in Israel, Lebanon and part of Syria. Havilah and 61 ______________________________________________________________________________ Raamah with Dedan and Sheba cover the area of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Nimrod is shown in Iraq. The descendents of Ham later inhabited the balance of Africa. The name Shem is the same as the word shem either as a conspicuous position in heaven or an appelation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by implication honor, authority, and character. The descendents of Shem settled thus. Joktan is shown in the Arabian Desert. Ophir is shown as covering Oman on the eastern tip and Yemen across the Gulf of Arabia ( Red Sea ) from Ethiopia. Hazarmaveth apparently settled part of Oman and People's Democratic Republic of Yemen. Running north from Ophir on the Red Sea were Sheba, Uzal, Havilah and finally Dedan in what is now Saudi Arabia. Lud settled the southern half of Turkey and most of Syria. Aram was about where Jordan is, and Asshur where the balance of Syria and upper Iraq is. Elam and Mash filled out Iraq drifting into Iran. Arphaxad was southern Iraq and Kuwait, including the city of Ur. The nation of Israel is descended from Shem ( through Peleg and Abram ), as we will see in the next chapter. Genesis 9:19-29 says, "These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread. An Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. And he said Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. And he said Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. God shall enlarge Japheth and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. And the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.".
