Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. Proverbs 22:28
"If you're thinking of writing your own book, one that's packed with "fresh, surprising insights" as we say in the business, here are a few ideas I found in the April slush pile you might want to avoid...   Midlife malaise: The summaries for these books always start like this one, for a title coming out in April: "Have you ever fantasized about ditching it all - the house, the job, the routine, even the comforts you enjoy - to follow your dream?" And they always end the same way, too: with the author heading to an isolated cabin, or buying a rickety old sailboat or traveling through Africa by camel and, whatever the adventure, learning to see "things one cannot see with the eyes alone." The implied message: Throw caution to the wind! Take a risk! But how risky is it when you have a nice, cozy book contract waiting for you when you come back? Three words: Ditch the pretense. It will make those of us working our sorry 9-to-5s feel better."

The white-collar world doesn't encourage camaraderie, far from it. There it's all about competition and fear--of losing one's job, for one thing. Other people are seen as sources of contacts or tips, at best; as competitors or rivals, at worst. And among the unemployed add shame and a sense of personal failure, the constant message that it's all your own fault. All this discourages any solidarity with others or real openness.
