Establishing Paternity.

Legal paternity must be determined before a child support obligation can be established.
Although there are exceptions, the legal fatherhood of a man can be established in three ways:
--being married to the mother of the child, in which case he is presumed to be the father of the child.
--if unmarried, by signing a legally binding acknowledgment of paternity form acknowledging that he is the father of the child; or
--if unmarried, by having a court order legally establishing the paternity of the child.

Information supplied by the mother on the birth certificate is not sufficient evidence that the man identified is or is not the father.
