if anything…
by romus simpson

if anything ever more beautiful than u
woke me into its earth & ripe morning
drew day around me so bold & cool that
an ocean was implicit in the courage of the language
& the scope of day needing reference
only fairly to earth moving against the daylit universe
something that wide i say
something more immense than vision or hope
intrinsic as the heart in the body in bed
planet broad & opaque as love

it would be a forest rumored to have no end
a life forever
a poem cataloging constellations
a sun whose run is a guess of light in the white light
a flat earth creating earth & tiling sky
& tolling each new continent until
bells were like the blue of sky
the alluvial window breathing day
new york from a single stone

or as freedom is
not as i understand it
being who i am poet & pain
but as god understands it having made eternity
the unfurling mathematics

or as god loves & creates infinity to house his love
or as he is constituent to endless things
finds his fancy in a window filled house
his desiring his lush saturn in the firebath dusk
his lust his loneliness
what binds him in his infinite skin

or his sky of eye
the creator's context
what he sees & dreams when he dreams when he sleeps
if anything ever more beautiful than u
