History of the Band

The band started in 2000, initially as a rock band, as typical school bands often were. Gareth had wanted to play guitar from an early age, and had learnt quickly. Together with a bass player and a drummer, the band that was then 'Creep' stood out on stage for the first time. Something we'd all rather forget. Part of the initial set was 'Mustang Sally'. Granted, our first ever gig was terrible but it showed one thing. We could play Blues. The band name changed to Faculty. We still played the same old stuff everyone had heard before; the band had little direction. It was late December 2001 when we finally realised something; of all the music we played, the blues side was something we all enjoyed more. We were good at it. Gaz had been taught blues guitar and he does it well. So, Faculty played it's last gig in Amlwch Memorial Hall and we said goodbye to the old band and began the Red River Band, getting rid of the old Green Day style of music and changing towards blues, clasic rock and funk. Sure, our old audience of under 16s were not impressed. We didn't care. As long as there was someone who enjoyed blues, there would be us to play it for them.

The band doesn't limit itself to simple gigs, mind. In the past, we have played support for Baloo's Band , a fantastic blues band that we are closely linked with. We have also featured other artists, such as guitarists and guest singers. Part of the appeal of live performances is wondering who we'll bring with us! (there ya go, great value for money). We have also played charity performances, such as playing at a charity line dancing event (boy oh boy was that a mistake. Ever seen Blues Brothers? That bit in the western bar? I wish we'd had some of that chicken wire for protection...but at lesat a lot of money was raised...)

The name 'Red River' came from the Amlwch river that runs from Parys Mountain, a well known Welsh copper mine. The river therefore has a reddish brown tint to it, and we were walking past it whilst trying to think of a name. Pretty simple. Thank God we weren't walking past the public conveniences... \par \par Our band is traditionally made up of guitarists. We are known for the sound of electric and acoustic guitars, bass, and drums. We have never had anything other than that within the band itself. \par \par More information on the band members (and how to become a band member) can be found on the Band Members page.
