Will he stay or will he go?
3/25/02

  • I'm talking about Offerman of course. It's not such a sure bet that Offy won't make the roster anymore, Grady Little made that clear after telling Jose to start working out in the outfield over the weekend. Looks like Michael Coleman's spot on the roster is in jeopardy and that the Sox are not quite ready to eat 8.5 million.

I think this move pretty much guarantees Offy a spot on the roster, but I also think it's only to show-case him a little, as the team (though denying it) has been trying to move him. The reason I say Michael Coleman will be the victim is because Damon Buford was sent to the minors on Saturday, leaving Coleman as the only 5th outfielder possibility left on the roster. We thought so anyway.

Also being sent down, and needed to be to get regular work, was Juan Pena. As long as he stays injury free, I guarantee we see him on the mound in Fenway before the season is over, heck I'll say before the all-star break. With Pena's demotion, Casey Fossum's place on the roster was officially announced. Fossum will start in the bull-pen, but i'm sure he'll get his share of starts as well. The only real battle left this spring is between Darren Oliver and Frank Castillo for the 5th rotation spot (the other headed to the pen).

As well as Oliver has done, not that Castillo hasn't, I think he (Oliver) is headed to the pen. I don't see Castillo as a very effective reliever, maybe Little sees it that way too, who knows. But I'm also begining to think that, with all the starting pitching we have right now (Pedro, Burkett, Lowe, Hermanson, and Castillo), along with four guys in the pen who can start (Wakefield, Fossum, Arrojo, and Oliver), and a couple more ready for the majors down at Pawtucket (Pena and Crawford), something has to give.

Sooner or later there's going to be a deal made. No idea who will stay and who will go, but we have too many arms for other teams not to come knocking. Unless Offy goes in any deal, I'm thinking we won't get anyone that will join the major league roster, but it may be the first move the new regime makes to start replenishing the farm.
