Damn non-Sports People
3/4/02

  • If any of you Sox addicts out there are anything like me, you take it personally when some non-sports personality says something about the Red Sox or the world of baseball in general, and has no idea what their talking about.

Case in point. I can only take so much WEEI on any given day, so I reserve my sports radio time for my evening commute home. In the morning I listen to your run of the mill pop station, it's a good station, most of it's audience though is women from what I hear (hope that doesn't say something about me).

Anyway, the news guy gets on this morning and lets us all know that the Red Sox lost yesterday, no big deal, they did lose. My issue was with the way he said it, the way he let all the people who really don't follow baseball know how the Sox spring is going thus far. When announcing that the Sox lost yesterday he said "...and the Red Sox lost, yet again, yesterday...".

Give me a break. It's Spring freaking Training, how many times do we have to say that record means absolutely nothing? Yes, we'd rather win, but it simply does not matter. The casual fan just doesn't realize that most of the sping games are played with kids that aren't going to see the majors, if at all, for another year or two. And excluding the last couple of games on the Grapefruit schedule you'll never see anything closely resembling an actual line-up that will be used this season.

I know this it's silly, even ridiculous, to get all up in a bind about dumb stuff like this, but hey, it's the Sox, and if you live in my world, it takes very little to put me on the defensive.

  • One other thing to mention, I've come to the conclusion that Nomar Garciaparra no matter what condition he's in, as long as he's on the diamond, will succeede. Yes, I just got done saying how much ST is meaningless, but to go thru what he did last year, all the rehab and pain, to go out and hit a homer in his first game, blows my mind. Nomar is a baseball God.
