Don't know if you have skeletons in your closet?
Here's some help. Make sure you get a proper start
first, and then you can follow these steps to a neater closet that's easier
to maintain:
Get rid of clothes you don't need. That's rule number one. If you don't
wear it, or try it on only for the dog, or always cover it up with something
else, you don't need it. Also, remove anything that doesn't fit, has unwanted
holes or stains you can't get out, is ripped irreparably, etc. That should
scale it down. Also get rid of anything you don't absolutely love. This is tough,
but you really won't notice they're gone - you gotta learn to break away! Oh, and
do the same with underwear and socks etc.
Is it blazing hot summer? Move out all your winter clothes. Keep one sweater
for a hiking trip into the mountains or some other emergency. If it's winter,
forget the shorts. Take all out of season clothes and put them in a suitcase
or box and hide it away.
Still have way too many clothes? If you still have 20 pairs of pants,
30 tops, etc. then you have to scale down again. Take half the clothes and
put them in another suitcase. Doesn't matter which half, but take some things
you totally totally would wear everyday if you could and also some things that you just
love wearing (remember all your "like" and "ok" and "hate" clothes are gone). If you still
have more clothes than you can handle, take out another half of what's left.
Now you have a scaled-down closet. Make piles: long sleeve shirts, pants, jeans,
short sleeves, t-shirts, underwear, socks. Underwear and socks have to go in drawers.
You don't have drawers? Get a flat box and put them in, folded or otherwise. Usually,
people don't mind wrinkled underwear.
Hang clothes you wear daily. It's easy to hang em back up. Get an extra hanger and
put a plastic bag, a sheet of paper or a sheet on it to use as a separator. Separate
hung clothes by type. Stuff you don't wear often (really nice outfits, specialty occasion
clothing, halloween costumes, should go in bottom drawers or the edge/back of your
closet. You can also get baskets to put sweaters, scarves, belts, etc. in at the
top of your closet or even under the bed (make sure they are closed though to protect).
Get stuff off the floor. Put small shelves at the bottom of the closet so
you can put whatever you try on and decide not to wear or pull off the hanger
there until you have time to hang it again.
If you're addicted to drawers (or if that's all you have), don't stuff. Put
just a few things in each drawer.
Whenever you take something off a hanger or out of a drawer, put it back if you're not wearing it. It
takes a total of 2.5 seconds (with practice) which is very little and is worth
avoiding the stress of a messy closet. Make sure you put shirts with shirts etc.
or you'll be lost. A tiny bit of extra time will save you hours later.
In a couple of weeks, take an hour to switch the clothes you have out with
the clothes you put away. It'll be a whole new wardrobe you love!
