August 2003
Welcome to my Unicorn page.

The Unicorn wing my is re-introduction to R/C flying after a 25-odd years break.  The aim was to find an almost indistructable plane, without too many bits & bobs sticking out.  The all EPP flying wing concept seemed ideal.  After long consideration the -then- new Unicorn had all the advantages, including the attractive $50 price for the core set.

This was also the first time I build a R/C plane all by myself (EPP or otherwise).  The first thing I did, even before ordering, was downloading the excellent instruction manual from Unicornwings' website (click on the picture at the top of this page), and read and re-read them till I knew them practically by heart.  I even made an A5 print for my diary at work...

After flying my 'Corn since September 2003, I can honestly say this is a great wing!  It can thermal, it can soar on the slopes, or you can just tear up the sky with the standard speed 400 setup.

It is not listed as a "beginners" plane, but with a few hours on a PC flight simulator you can take your 'Corn to a field and throw it into the blue yonder.  There is not much I didn't do with my poor 'Corn.  I crashed into fences, dirt, sand, concrete, myself, benches, gates, cliff-sides, from anywhere between 3 meter and 20plus meters high.  The only damage I incurred were broken winglets and Gunther props.  The nose looks a bit wrinkled now, but it shows "character".

Now (April 2004), after 100 plus flights on the standard speed400 setup, the little Graupner motor is finally showing signs of impending demise.  I will get a new one to bind me over, but am seriously looking into going brushless.
Next winter I will probably rip of the tape, move the servos further forward and center, and replace the pushrods with burried Flexi Rods, spackle the wing and re-cover my 'Corn with heatshrink material.
