Chapter Nine
Power of the Emerald Moon
Thea and Glenn sat within the paladin’s chamber, for several minutes Glenn repeatedly reassured the dryad that everything was the same as before, except that now he understood her better and felt even closer to her.
"I do not see why you would worry that we would not accept you though Thea..." Glenn explained as he looked upon the woman before him, her eyes gazing down at her hands. " We brought you in, cared for you, and grew to love you, not knowing any of your background, because of who you are, not what you are. It is like.. If I were not a dragoon, but rather.. per say, the stable boy, would you think any less of me?"
Thea looked up at the knight before her with wide eyes, she was surprised both by the comparison and the word he chose to use, 'love'. Yes..Love as a friend perhaps, even the best of friends, but... would they ever be more, she yearned for such. "Of course it would not matter to I if you were a stable boy.. the dragoon you are now, a Deva, or the lord of the manor even!" Thea blurted out.
"Exactly.. or look at it this way, I am human, and you are a dryad, do you think any less of me because I am not of your kind?" Glenn expressed, knowing full well that he was proving his point wonderfully, he could see it in her eyes. Perhaps he was not the only one with a transparent gaze.
"No of course it would not... You can halt your explanations now... I see fully what you are describing, I understand, thank you."
"No need to thank me Thea... I do have one question though.."
"Yes, what do you wish to know," the damsel replied, now focussing her attention upon the quilt covering the bed they sat upon, running her fingers along the various trims.
"Excuse me if I sound rude, but, you say you are a dryad.. to my knowledge, aren't dryads supposed to have wings?" Glenn questioned, his head cocked to one side.
Thea looked up suddenly, astounded at the question, but prepared to answer, "Ah yes... I have not reached the time where the wings will be acquired. We 'gain' our wings, per say, only once we experience ultimate happiness..."
"Oh I see.." Glenn murmured as he fumbled with the silky ribbon which had fallen into his grasp once again, reflecting to himself, he focussed upon the fact that Thea was indeed not happy enough, as she had yet to acquire her wings. This saddened the knight, as truly, all he wanted was for the brunette to have eternal happiness. Knowing he could give her the world, if of course what he could give is what she wanted, he still had several doubts of such. Silence came between the two, Glenn still pondered the fact of when the right time would come in which he could tell the maiden his true feelings towards her. Although he had wanted to do so earlier that day, as well as presently, he concluded that now was not the best time, and let the thought drift to the back of his mind for the hundredth time that day.
It was Thea whom broke the silence between the two. "Glenn," she questioned innocently as she looked into his face, her eyes shining emeralds, " that mauve ribbon, I have yet to see you without it, why is that.. Does it have some significance of any sort?"
"Actually.." replied the swordsman as he gazed back at the woman before him, " My mother gave this to me when I was quite young.. The last thing she gave me before she passed on actually.."
Thea could see sorrow in the young man's cloudy blue eyes, she felt guilty about asking such a question, " Oh.. I am sorry, I should not have pried, it is really
non--"
"No no! It is quite alright, I've come to terms with this already.. truly. It is just I have never told anyone of such. most ask about my deceased father, or at one time of Dario.. no one never really knew my mother, other than my brother and father of course.
My mother was an astonishing woman, actually, it was her who always believed in my father as a deva.. and in both Dario and I as well. Always so optimistic and full of love, energetic.. She was a faithful wife and an amazing mother.. Though illness took over her body, her attitude stayed healthy until the end."
Glenn sighed, his eyes watering as he looked down, trying to hide his emotions from her. Without thinking Thea pulled the paladin to her chest, she could feel the dampness slightly, though it didn't bother her, nor did it stop him from going on with his story.
"The ribbon.. She gave me one night when I was frighted, I cannot remember why I was so scared.. But her comfort cured such fear, and she knew it. It was at that time she gave me the ribbon, tied it around my head, much like it is now,”motioned Glenn as he pulled away from the dryad and pressed a hand to his forehead. “ Her remedy was this, the explanation was that the ribbon held her blessing, and whenever I was frightened or worried, I would have the ribbon, so she was always by my side, and would forever be..”
His gaze was not directed at her anymore Thea noticed, he seemed almost uncomfortable.
“I know, it seems sort of childish, in a way... though it is something I have held on to all my life.”
“I deem no such thought! That is an amazing origin. It is alluring to see such dedication, I’m astounded yet touched at the same time.” Thea watched closely as the paladin silently stood and walked over to a rather large bureau and opened the top drawer. “Glenn..? Did I say something wrong?” queried Thea as she brought herself to her feet, the dubiousness tearing her insides apart as she wondered if he would be able to read her inner thoughts upon her exterior.
“Not at all,” the knight smiled as turned and looked at the beauty before him. Approaching her, Glenn lifted a hand to lie upon her left cheek, settling on her silky glimmering skin. “From me to you,” whispered the swordsman as he now took the dusty pink satin ribbon which had taken from the drawer and wrapped it around her head. Without any thought the brunette moved closer and held up her hair, letting her love tie the ribbon more easily.
“It suits you,” beamed the knight at the female aglow before him, “ and now I say the same to you, no matter what, I’m always here for you, and whenever you feel alone and cannot call for me, this ribbon will remind you that you’re always safe, I’ll never let any harm come to you.”
Once again Thea found herself embracing the knight, she could feel him kiss her hair, though she still yearned for more. To have him hold her in his arms for eternity, crush her mouth over his and vice versa, taste his sweetness and soft lips, feel true passion between them. Secretly, almost absent mindedly she even ached to be one with him, to have him inside her, making love. But the thought subsided as she felt his grasp loosen as he started to withdraw.
“How fast the time has gone, late is it!” exclaimed Glenn as he scratched his head,     “I do not even know what is on the agenda for tomorrow..”
“Aye,” said Thea as she found herself twirling the end of her pink ribbon, much like she’d seen Glenn do time and time again. “I believe it is time that I return to my own chamber and let us both get some rest.”
“Oh I was not imply that you leave!” Glenn blushed at his outburst.
“Do not worry, you are right, it is late, I really must be going,” Thea went to leave, then turned and gave a smile as she said her final goodnight and closed the door behind her.
Glenn watched her do so, then plopped himself down upon the soft mattress and gave a sigh. Would he ever find the courage to express his true feelings he pondered, then laid down to rest his head on the pillow after he blew out the candle by his bedside. Time would tell, but for now the subject would be dropped as he was much too tired to stay awake.
