Webpage Promotion and Search Engines

There are some things you can do to help your site get listed, or listed higher in the search results. Because search engines are not updated every day it might take from two to four weeks or longer to see your site listed. (NOTE: As of March, 1999 some Search Engines were behind as much as 6 - 8 months in indexing webpages.)

Probably one of the more overlooked items which can have a large influence on your listing is the title of your pags. Titles are read by the search engine and a very descriptive title will encourage people to click on it. The title is contained between the and tags in the document.

Not all search engines use tags as a source of KEYWORDS which are indexed. Currently there are three major search engines which do.

Use of the description meta tag is important for those search engines. This description will be read by the search engine and will also be used in the search results display. A good description can encourage someone to click on your link. A description meta tag looks like this:

Use the keywords meta tag. The keywords you specify for your page will help the search engine identify what your page is about. A keywords meta tag looks like this:

In your webpages use frames sparingly. Frames can confuse the search engine because the actual frameset page usually doesn't have content. Use frames only when necessary.

The use of a tag causes a number of search engines to entirely "skip" the page on which it is contained because it is interpreted as a "redirect" page.

If you don't want your site listed at all? You can remove your page from future indexing by adding the following tag to each page you don't want to show up in the search engine:

Remember, this will not remove your page immediately, it will just ensure that it is not added the next time your site is indexed.

To build your "description" and "keywords" meta tags go to the META Tag Builder and enter your information. Copy and Paste meta tags will be generated for your use.

To submit your webpage or site to search engines you can visit each search engine and "add" your URL to their database or you can use one of the registration services. Nearly every search engine has a location where you can add your URL. With Yahoo, it is slightly different and you should "click" on "How to Suggest a Site."

There are also registration services for search engines; most offer FREE submission to a limited number of sites. Two of these services are:
