Mask Masters And Myth Makers If it were not for the Quality rubber masks that Don Post Studios began making and selling in 1939, a certain little boy who grew up to be Verne Langdon would not have entered into partnership with Don Post, and create what we now know as the Calendar Line of classic monsters that we, today, all hold so dear. Don Post, Verne Langdon, Don Post Jr., Rob Tharp. These are names of Mask Makers. We all are the Myth Makers; all of us who collect masks, and appreciate the benchmark that was set in 1963 with the advent of the Don Post line of Hollywood Horrors masks. We collectors hold those creators dear, for they created the stuff of which our fondest nightmares are made. And me? I'm Kelly Mann, The Mask Doctor. |
What did it take to make Don Post Studios the most respected name in the mask collecting community? Simply the fact that there IS a mask collecting community! |
On July 11th, 2004, mask makers and mask collectors met for an unforgettable day of camaraderie and conversation.
For me, the plan began weeks earlier, when I received a phone invitation from my actor friend and mask collector, Dan Roebuck. Dan said that Pete Roberts was coming to LA on business, and would be visiting Dan on Sunday the 11th. Dan wondered if I would like to fly out and visit for the weekend with himself and Pete, two fellow Pennsylvania mask enthusiasts. I said yes when he told me many of our other mask collector friends would be there as well. I spoke with Verne Langdon about this event, and he instantly agreed to attend. At that point, Verne suggested it was the perfect venue in which to Smash the ZOMBIE mask mold. Since we had just sold mask #30 to Aaron Lewis, and were delivering mask #29 to Dan Roebuck that weekend. I agreed. Dan had his monster, mask, stills, and toy collections in top shape for the event. His charming wife Kelly created incredible snacks and salads that were the perfect compliment to the day. They grilled hot dogs, burgers and veggie burgers for all. There were even two cakes especially themed for the party.. |
