"There lurks, perhaps, in every human heart," wrote Samuel Johnson, "a desire of distinction, which inclines every man to hope, and then to believe, that nature has given himself something peculiar to himself." What better way to put that distinction on display than in a website?

I call this site an ever "in construction" site for changes in the body, spirit and mind will be reflected here. Thus, this site is really, about me.

PENT-UP DEMAND is real! (ricE, April 12, 2003)

Nasty A day after my last posting, separate reports highlighted that retail sales in the U.S. posted strong rebounds in March, and similarly consumer confidence from a survey by the University of Michigan showed its preliminary consumer sentiment index rose to 83.2 this month from 77.6 in March.

Retail purchases jumped 2.1 per cent in March, the Commerce Department reported. But lets just recall what happened in March ? anticipation of the War in Iraq and the war begun on the 19. In other words, first an uncertainty environment creates unwillingness to part with income and upon news of war, pent-up demand for consumer goods which acquisition has been held back for so long overcame the CNN effect.

Consumer sentiments for April while leaped from March figures amidst news of war casualties, reflects only how consumers are perceiving the direction of the war ? anticipating a smooth, short one. And on top of all that, that Tomahawk missiles actually hit Iraq on March 19 relieved all hard talk, name callings, debates, assumptions, diplomatic negotiations, moral and ethical discussions, and to the consumer ambiguity, into fact. In effect, economics distant from the war zone and that lack human rights understanding, hoped for the war, just to get it over with. From their perspective, so long as there are ongoing discussions, the economy is stalling, nothing was happening and such prohibits them from the path of richness and capitalistic abuses.

So, what’s next after pent-up demand? Nothing. Consumer items are not exactly flying off the shelves despite rebounds in March retail sales numbers to actualize empty warehouses. Businesses will still be maintaining low-level inventories to minimize cost and adopting a wait-and-see attitude on further developments. Unemployment problem will not improve.

And if its only retail / consumer goods sales a.k.a. household necessities, demand is not sufficient to generate excitement in businesses to upgrade primeval technologies. Then there is also a problem with overcapacity factories. These are the areas however which create robust economic rebounds sufficient to forge employment. Pent-up demands in retail and consumer sales are minuscule in the larger scale of things.
