"Beginner's Luck" (2000) 18" x 22" Coloured Pencil |
Award winner at the 2001 CPSA International Coloured Pencil Exhibition |
The wonder of discovery in children of all ages and the grandeur of the past are among the many things that inspire me. “Beginner’s Luck” blends old with new, sophistication with playfulness and wisdom with innocence. The humour (hopefully) is in the juxtaposition. The unabashed pride and joy in little Matthew’s “look what I did!” expression added considerably to the charm as well as to the theme. Of course, the main idea comes from every artist’s desire to create a masterpiece, the next Mona Lisa if you will, ever since we first put pencil to paper or paint to canvas. |
