Dyson of the House of Faerst |
Dyson is my first character created from the masterpiece known as the Psionic Handbook. Using an amazing article I found in Dragon Magazine, I was able to give him a rich history and fun personality. The campaign he played in fell apart, but I have high hopes that Dyson will rise again... |

The Origins of Dyson Faerst Dyson was born to a loving family in the village of Inkaerek. Being the youngest of four children, he was often babied within his household. Dyson’s father, Hacasin, was making enough money to support the family as a driver for a well-known shipping service, while his mother, Petrique, was tending to the small parcel of land with the help of Dyson’s older brothers. While not having an excess of money, the family did get by and Dyson did not go hungry or naked. The years passed, and unfortunately, so did Dyson’s father. It was an attack from bandits while Hacasin was transporting some grain to the north. The bandits had thought that the shipping company was hiding something valuable inside the grain drums, but that proved not to be the case. Hacasin’s passing effected Dyson’s eldest brother the most, and Hacasin Jr. ran off with an adventuring band determined to rid the world of evil. Nobody ever heard back from him. It is assumed that Dyson’s brother is still doing well, but the life span of an adventurer can sometimes be unfortunately short. When Hacasin’s income no longer helped with the growing expenses, Dyson’s two remaining eldest brothers took jobs to help. Being old enough to help with the chores of the farm, Dyson, his older sister, and his mother all tended the farm together. Taking on the tasks of two grown men made young Dyson into a very strong little boy. He worked from dawn until late in the evening for years. It wasn’t until one day when he was entering his early teen years when Dyson began showing signs that he was more than a farm hand. Moving small boulders, uprooting tree trunks, and moving large quantities of water around were second nature to the seasoned farm lad, yet one very large boulder finally bested his strength and that of his workhorse. Not willing to back down from this seeming challenge of his skills, he pushed and pulled with ropes and even attempted to chip it to death with a hammer. Unwilling to budge, the rock stood in defiance of the young farmer. Dyson crawled up to the boulder in near exhaustion and tried feebly to push with his hands while lying on his belly in one last desperate attempt to best this menace. Using a force of power that he didn’t know existed within him, Dyson hurled the horse-sized rock away from him while showering the area with a rainbow colored surge of energy. When he awoke, Dyson was unable to explain what had happened and he continued to tend to his daily duties as soon as his strength returned. While resting at night, strange sounds and flashes of light plagued Dyson continuously. Objects would fall from the shelves as he passed, and his dinner fork promptly avoided his grasp at the dinner table. Local people began to talk, and he began preparations to leave his families’ farm to save his mother and sister the shame that would be brought upon them by having a cursed son living in their home. Before Dyson left, the family was visited by a man in cleric’s robes. He said that he had heard about a boy who was possessed by a demon and was here to help. Dyson unwillingly left with the man fully expecting his god’s wrath to be upon him. He packed a few of his things, and left that very day never to return to the good village of Inkaerek. The man in the cleric’s robes was named Brilman Novar. He was a pale man with deep blue eyes and raven colored hair. He said that he was from a very prestigious house in the west lands called Novar of Talaron. Brilman told Dyson that he roamed the countryside looking for very special boys and girls who had certain gifts. Intrigued by the story, Dyson probed the man for any and all information that he was willing to part with. Brilman was very evasive, but told Dyson that they were going to a coastal village in the south where he could meet with more Talaire. It was there that he would be accepted by one of the six houses and be trained to control these outbursts by teachings centuries old. Upon reaching the coastal village, Dyson was introduced, questioned, tested, and finally accepted into the ancient house of Faerst of Talaron. His training began that day and has continued for the last four years. Now, a fully-grown man by the name of Dyson Faerst is leaving the hidden establishment that is currently serving as the house of Faerst. The least populated house of the six, but arguably the most potent. Under his jerkin rests a medallion depicting an open hand on a white background; the symbol of the Faerst. Dyson begins his journey to open new pathways of his mind, to obtain a better understanding of the world, and to report back to any Talaire he may find about the whereabouts of the evil illithids who destroyed the world of his adopted ancestors. |
