Most Ffaff, after having undergone extensive apprenticeship with an elder Ffaff, embark on their own trek accross Terra in search of their Patron. Some of the stories told around campfires to young faeries that included powerful wizards, or legendary conquerers are actually Patrons, chosen by a Ffaff and it is the power of the Ffaff being highlighted. It is the ultimate goal of the wandering Ffaff to find a man or woman whose personality and ambition is great enough to deserve the power afforded by having your own personal, loyal, powerful wizard devoted to your every whim.
Should the Ffaff outlast their Patron, as is common for the bright flame of the Patron to burn out quickly, then it is that Ffaff's duty to pass on his knowledge to a new generation. The arrival of the pupil is always foretold in the stars, and it is rare for one Ffaff to teach a member of his own race his skills. Therefore Ffaff rarely look alike, and their powers vary greatly from generation to generation.
One thing that remains the same, is the telling of the Word. The great power and magic of the Ffaff is not a taught practice, but instead is an ancient Word of magic that can be traced down the line of the order. With the receiving of the Word, the Ffaff finds his magical affinity vastly improved, and the inner, intense desire to find his Patron begins to build.
Though it has never happened, the Word of the Ffaff is guarded as a secret, for should it be known that the Ffaff carry such power, the Word could be tortured from them and the power transferred to someone less deserving.
