ALİ RECAN & ALFA YAYINLARI
Alfa Yayınları [Alfa Publications] set up by Ali Recan is notable for supplying Marvel's 'Conan the Barbarian' comics, as well as a bunch of  Marvel superhero comics, to Turkey at a time (1980s) when the comics industry was in decline.
Recan was a comics artist who had created 'Yüzbaşı Volkan' [Captain Volkan] comics, featuring the adventures of a Turkish air force fighter pilot, in the 1970s. Debutting as a newspaper strip and used as filler space in
Tay Yayınları's Bonanza, Yüzbaşı Volkan had received its own weekly comic magazine published by Tay. Seeing the success of his creation, Recan set up Alfa Yayınları and began publishing Yüzbaşı Volkan himself in 1978.
Nevertheless, it would be Alfa's picking up Conan the Barbarian which would safeguard the publishing house's place on the market as
Conan became the most popular comics of the 1980s.
In mid-1980s, the ownership of Alfa passed onto Turgut Sağıroğlu as Recan remained as editor for a while. However, a few years later, he left Alfa altogether and became the editor of a short-live venture named 'Marvel' (which published
Hulk, Silver Sulfer and a separate magazine simply as Marvel). Meanwhile, Alfa continued without him.
Recan apparently regained the Alfa trademark sometime in the 1990s and maintained a flimsy but persistent presence on the market with reprints of his back catalogue till his recent death.
