THE ŞAKRAK FAMILY:
Pioneer Publishers of Belgian-French Comics in Turkey
The leading comics from the Belgian journal Spirou were largely carried out for a very long period in Turkey  by the Şakrak Family in the form of traced, black&white versions. In 1959, Adnan Şakrak's Bilgi Yayınları [Bilgi Publications] began issuing the weekly Sipru [Spirou & Fantasio] and Red Kit [Lucky Luke] comics, joined a year later by Küçük Prens [Johann & Pirlaut]. These were unlicensed publications. Sometime in mid-1960s, the Bilgi Yayınları banner was dropped and the ownership of the magazines passed onto Bilge Şakrak.
While
Sipru and Küçük Prens were short-lived (the latter probably because of the limited number of original adventures) not withstanding sporadic reprints, Şakrak continued Red Kit without a break into early 1970s. Other comics magazines issued by Şakrak include Viking, Alptekin (Turkish medieval heroics)), Altınkanat (Dago), Dago (which used 'Rakar' as filler space), Zapo (western) and Kansas (western), all these in 1969-70. The last comics put out by Şakrak appears to be Rakar (1974).
