About New Rising Star MB Church On march 10, 1956, Reverend William Holly was divinely led to establish a mission and teaching ministry at the home of Brother and Sister Jack Deramus, 5322 Harding in Detroit Michigan. (Brother and Sister Deramus are the son-in-law and daughter of the late Deacon King Williams). After holding services in a teaching manner for four and a half moths, a location for a missionary baptist church was sought. On July 24. 1956, the Rising Star Missionary Baptist was organized. Among those present were: Dr. F. P. Jones, Moderator, Metropolitan District Association; Pastor C.J. Gadson, East Lake Baptist Church; and Sister Willette Chavis, who acted as secretary. Reverend Gadson led the hymn " A Charge To Keep I Have," and Reverend Copeland read the Scripture Matthew 16:13 - 20. Prayer was led by Deacon Newt Williams. The meeting was turned over to Dr. Jones, who asked if there were any members to join with letters. There were three: Sister Tommie Holly, Brother Prince Tillaman, and Sister Nellie Nabors. The secretary read the three letters for the above persons, who were members of the Eastlake Baptist Church. Dr. Jones asked for a name for the new church. Brother Tillman moved, and Sister Holly seconded that the church be named "Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church". The motion was carried; however, the church was later renamed "New Rising star Misssionary Baptist Church". Moderator F. P. Jones then asked for a name to be submitted for Pastor. Sister Nabors moved and Brother Tillman seconded that Reverend William Holly be named as Pastor and organizer of the said church. The motion was carried. Dr. jones turned the meeting over to Pastor Holly, who gave brief remarks. He thanked the moderator and those present for their kindess; he thanked God for a chance to serve him as a preacher. Reverend Holly turned the meeting back to Moderator Jones. Dr. Copeland gave the closing remaks; the closing song was ''God Be With You Till We Meet Again". The early church was located at 10739 Mack Avenue at Montclair, where it remained for six months. At this time, the congregation had grown from three charter members to eighty-three. The Lord then directed Pastor Holly to 10605 Mack Avenue at Harding. Some of the memebers from that time are still with us today: the Holly family, the Tillman family, Sister Lottie M. Robinson, Sister Florence Ballinger, Sister Vera Mae Green, Sister Lessie Clark, Mother Stacie Greene, Sister Donna Manual, Sister Verneda Blair, and others. On Febuary 2, 1957, the church obtained a lease with an option to buy. In June 1959, our former edfice was extended to accommodate the growing membership. In 1963 the church purchased three lots at 3728-3738 St. Clair. The lot adjacent to the former church was purchased in 1973, and construction of the new church began in 1974. After many heartaches, numerous trials and disappointments, Almighty God blessed us with a new edifice on November 3, 1975. The first services were held on November 16, 1975. Our former church building was completely renovated in 1977. On April 2, 1978, it was dedicated the William Holly Educational Center and served for fifteen years as one of the outstanding day care centers in the City of Detroit. It later housed the New Calvary Head Start Program as we continued to reach out to the community. The church has two vans which are used to provide transportation for the membership. The lot on the corner of Mack and French Road was purchased in the fall of 1977 and is presently a parking lot. The Lord granted us the privilege of purchasing the lot to the immediate east of our ediface. We pray that Go will bless us to expand our ediface in that direction. In the meantime, this land has made it possible to enlarge our parking lot. The Lord has also blessed us with real estate on the southwest corner of Mack and Harding as well as the lot on St. Clair near Mack. Added to this great acclaim is the establishment of the New Rising Star Credit Union. Victory continues to be ours. We are eternally grateful to our Lard and Savior Jesus Christ for the incredible blessing of liquidating our mortgage. On December 1, 1996, the New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church experienced a spirit-filled Mortgage Burning Ceremony. God has enabled us to attain many wonderful accomplishment through faith, prayer, and the phenomenal leadership of our illustrious Pastor, The Reverend Dr. William Holly. truly our motto is, "We've Come This Far By Faith," Amen. Amen. Amen/ |
