HONG KONG PART FOUR, PAGE THIRTEEN; DEC. 24, 2003
Day 89; Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003.

Xmas Eve! Wow! Already! A rather quiet day for me. On Saturday evening, after the concert, I had taken the Star Ferry across to Central and sat next to two young sisters. We had agreed with each other that Hong Kong was really looking good now, and I had told them the website address of this travel journal. Today one of the sisters, R, had emailed me and asked if I would like to "meet for a drink" after she got off of work at 6:00PM. Well, this was very flattering to me! A young lady asking me for a drink? So of course I said yes. Well, as it turned out, we met for tea, with her boyfriend! Hah! It was still flattering, but on a different level. She (and her boyfriend) were very excited about my trip and my website, and they wanted to talk with me about traveling, the USA, etc. So it was very nice to spend some time with them!

After tea I went back to the waterfront near the Cultural Center. According to a flyer that I had been given at the HK airport, at 8:00PM every night there was supposed to be some sort of light show at the downtown buildings. Well, 8:00 came and went and no light show. I then took the ferry back across to the HK Convention Center on the HK island side. I walked along the waterfront walkway that runs behind the convention center. It was crowded with people enjoying the view, the pleasant night air, and the beginning of the holiday weekend. But, the views from here are not nearly as good as from across the bay.

I then walked to the nearby Wan Chai bar and night club district, famous for Hong Kong bar girls, ala Suzie Wong. But, despite many entreaties by the bar matrons sitting outside many of these bars, I did not enter any of them. Instead I went to Coyotes, sat at the bar, had a beer, and enjoyed about an hour of conversation with a man from Argentina, who works here in HK handling marine insurance claims. Given my insurance background we had plenty to talk about.

After finishing my beer I walked down the street to a bar/disco called Fenwicks. It was about 10:30, and the band was just starting to play. The dance floor was filled with young ladies, so I joined a group of 6 and everyone smiled (especially me). Hey, this is Xmas Eve! I sat at the bar and had a couple Cokes, dancing now and then. At midnight the band counted-down the seconds until Xmas, and then played a medley of Xmas songs (in dance rhythm). It was great fun, but I had to leave about 12:20 to catch the last MTR train home.
