Judge John Frew Stewart

Judge John Frew Stewart, Adjutant of the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry (from Ely).

The Judge wrote a fifty page testament of his service with the 14th and 39th entitled "The Last Statement of Judge John Frew Stewart." It is unique because it is the only commentary of length recording the service of the 39th. There are some references in various letters and chronicles, but Judge Stewart's account is the only work of its kind. In the "Last Statement", the Judge refers to a companion document which discusses in detail the major battles in which the 39th participated. I would love to find that document! Contact me, Robert M. Baker, if you have any knowledge of this document which may be in the papers of William Elsey Connelly.
